Trunk Lock Problems

I have a 2002 Escape and am having an intermittent problem with the trunk lock. The remote and manual lock system, while working with the four passenger doors, is not working on the rear gate lock (and glass). When the gate is unlocked, I can open the rear gate and glass without a problem. However, the locking/unlocking mechanism seems to not work on occassion. It seems to be a problem in hotter weather - if the car has been sitting in the sun, the locking/unlocking mechanism stops working (again, just on the gate, not the doors).

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this and how to fix it?

If it works intermittently, it's most likely a problem with the lock/unlock solenoid sticking. You could try lubing it with a spray lube. You need to remove the hatch inner cover by removing 4 screws on the bottom and pulling it off. The glass needs to be in the up position to get the wiper motor out of the way. If the solenoid sticks in the locked position, there is no non-destructive way to get the inner cover off because the hatch can't be opened; so you should try to fix it before that happens.

Thanks very much for the suggestion. I'll try that and report back.
