Can't keep the voltage regulated...
My voltage with the engine running is about 15 volts at the battery and coil. I changed the regulator and it didn't help so I changed it again and it still didn't help. What could be causing this? If I unplug the regulator it goes down to 12.5V. Wiring seems to be decent so I don't suspect the short but its not impossible of course. Also there is a little black box between the battery and the solenoid. I would like to know what this is. It is very old and crusty but when I disconnect it nothing changes.

I got it. It was the alternator of all things. I called my hometown mechanic/machinist and he said sometimes the diodes go bad in the alternator and will casue this even with a good regulator.

If you are using the old style regulator you can adjust the points and put the voltage where you like, but you need a little higher voltage to push a charge in the battery.
