Question A/C Clutch Replacement?

Just wondering if it is possible to replace the clutch on the a/c compressor without having to replace the whole compressor. I'm not positive yet, but I think that is all thats wrongg with mine.

Yes.....very easy job. Check it out in your Haynes, or search here.....but all you have to do is to remove the belt and then remove the small bolt holding the clutch assembly....thats about it IIRC.

Make sure you get a clutch puller, buy or rent it. It makes life alot easier.

Didn't need it on my 94....(FS10 compressor IIRC). It simply came off after removing the retainer bolt. The pulley did not come off....just the clutch assembly.

well I installed a new clutch, and at first it wouldn't engage. Now it works and the a/c blows ice cold, but it makes a tapping sound. Is there any adjustments to make, or is my compressor going out or somthing?

Might be a bearing in the compressor, mine does it too, haven't gotten around to it yet.

Unhappy

Well I tryed driving around with the A/C on today, and it worked fine at first, but then it stopped blowing cold. I turnede off the ac and pulled into a parking lot and lifted the hood, and sure enough now when I turn it on the clutch isn't spinning again. It works sometimes and not others, and I don't know what conclusion to draw. Bad clutch? (just replaced it) Incorrect installation? or is the compressor going out? I'm still running R12, so If I have to change out the compressor i'm sure i'll have to convert to the R134 or whatever its called. I need some suggestions, I don't want my compressor to sieze up and catch on fire or anything, so i'm only running the ac for short periods for evaluation purposes...........

It may not be turning on because of a low charge.

Noise is not a good thing and these compressors are very weak. If you really want the A/C to work, it may be a good idea to get it serviced now before the compressor really goes bad and locks up:

Here is what just happened to me:

http://www.autoacforum.com/messagevi...threadid=15104

And an explanation of what happens if you let them go too long making noise:

You need a bunch of stuff to fix these systems right, at least a gauge set/manifold, a vacuum pump and something to flush with.
