bad starters
I have a 78 f250 4x4 w/400 auto. The starter is starting to skip and grind. This is the 7th starter and 2nd flex plate to take a dump in the 10 years I have owned the truck. I've tried different brands from different parts stores and it doesn't seem to matter, except the current one is a junkyard unit and has lasted the longest. What is going wrong here?

I never had a problem until i installed headers. At first I thought it was just from the heat coming off the headers. But, I have removed the headers and still replaced the starter twice. I don't think it would be faulty install because more than one person, including myself, has changed the starters when they've gone bad. Also, the first flex plate was installed by an ASE certified mechanic. Is it possible there could be some warpage somewhere that was caused by the heat from the headers?
