OK, I am not a mechanic, but I bought my 70' F-100 2WD to try and learn what I can. I have learned much but I have run into a stumbling block with my project. I was offered a 360 v-8 for practically nothing when a neighbor was junking his truck, so I bought it. I currently have the stock 240 L6 with manual 3 speed. I bought a C4 and steering column from an automatic truck off ebay and planned on rebuilding my 360 to drop it all in together. One of my friends told me the C4 will not handle behind the 360 so I am at an impass. If it will work, I would love to do this, but if not, I would be content to stick with my 240 and just put in the C4. I need to figure out what will work for sure and if I need to make modifications so I don't blow the tranny or cause headaches that I don't have to.
I was afraid of that....Is it simply bolt patterns? I was told something about clutch packs at one point that I didn't realy understand. I also wondered if I could drop in the 360 without moving the existing tranny, I want to avoid replacing the driveshaft if I can. And thanks for the info.....

Yes it's the bellhousing bolt pattern, the FE is unique. Your 240 uses the smallblock bolt pattern, the FE won't bolt to that bellhousing either. Sorry.
I got the bellhousing with the 360, the guy I bought it from allowed me to take whatever I wanted, he was literally waiting on the tow truck to drag it off. The transmission he had was the same 3-spd I have now, so I know that'll bolt up but I was hoping I could put it in without backing the tranny up and needing a shorter driveshaft. Any input?

Barry, If he wan'ts the feel of a real motor, he should be able to bolt the 360 with the FE bell to the 3 speed tranny that is in the truck now. He needs to start looking for a buyer for the C4 though.

John, I know it will all bolt up but don't know if the tranny will end up moving backward or forward or stay in the same place. I can't imagine it moving backwards, the inline six is longer than the V8.
I think I am going to try rebuilding the 360 with my father-in-law's help and mating it with the 3 speed. Apart from motor mounts will I have to change much?

Dude, If you are gonna rebuild the 360, find a 390 crank and rod set and build it back as a 390. You will be much more happy with the correct crank in that block.

Hmmm! I think the C4 will work nicely behind the six cylinder. The three speed will also work nicely behind the FE. You need to decide! Personally I'd leave the three speed and six in there for now and work on the rest of the truck. Maybe power steering, power disk brakes, the wiring, glass, rust, springs and hundreds of other things that need attention. How about AC or a nice sterio, tilt steering, power windows! Then when the truck is complete and running good and looking good I'd consider changes in the engine/transmission area. Besides after driving it and using it you will have a better idea of what you really need in a truck. A 360 to a 390 with a C6 is excellent, figure 3 grand. A built 6 with C4 would be nice as well. IMHO of course!
