the od light started flashing, the service dept checked the codes and tried downloading a new program(torque converter)didn't work,a new sensor pack, didn't work, checked the electrical system in tranmission, still nothing. truck was driving fine just the blinking od light, now i'm being told a new transmission, 87000 miles(all highway miles),has anybody else had the problem?
I would advise against the new transmission... These 5R55W trannies are notorious; the one in my '02 died at 52,000 miles (no towing, tranny flushed by dealer @ 30,000 miles)... they put a new Ford factory unit in, it failed 20,000 miles later. This time, as it was under the new 3 year 36,000 mile warranty (new part), they made the dealer rebuild it. Man, what a difference! My feeling is that the crap they put in my truck was the same garbage that came out of the same warehouse, whatever, they used when they built the thing. After their tranny guy rebuilt this thing, and updated the computer, this thing shifts better than it ever did new, and better than the new replacement. I've got a good feeling about it now... see if you can get it rebuilt.. it should be slightly cheaper, and I'd rather have a set of experienced hands building the thing rather than the slobs that are throwing the "factory-new" ones together.
I have the same problem on my 03 explorer and was told the same thing, need to replace tranny. Stealer also told me I need to replace engine cause of a slight knock. That was last year and 12000 miles ago. Still nothing wrong but the od light blinking, drives pretty good.
