Hitting the road.

Hello, Ford truck fans and users. I've owned a couple of Fords in my day. My first Ford truck was a 1978 super cab, long bed. We used it for towing a small travel trailer, and horse trailer.

I've also sold trucks at a dealership.

I've come to this forum in the hopes that you good folks can help me with my questions. I've scoured the internet and am having trouble getting the info I need answered in a specific way. In other words I need to know without a doubt before I make a commitment.

Before I post my first question I want to thank everyone in advance for sharing their knowledge and expertise with me.

Sincerely,
Patty Jr.

Thank you Wiingnut. Good to be here. I've already gotten some good info from people. I've got to find a tow vehicle rated for 18000 pounds, but I do not want to take the depreciation hit on a new one. I've already took that hit on the new fifth wheel. Any suggestions?

4x4's

I really did not want to take the depreciation hit on a 2006. I need a tow vehicle though rated at 18000. I notice you have listed the f150 both older model 4x4's. Is a 4x4 rated at a higher weight carrying capacity? Also I did want to stay with a diesel. I believe I can still drive that unhitched and it will be affordable to drive.

Thank you for the input.

I know there are plenty of older F-250's around with the 6.0 and the 7.3 that are still in great condition with lots of miles of use left. And, yes, you'll save a ton of money getting a used one! My brother still drives a 96 with the 7.3, and it runs great! Good luck with your search!

I believe if you can find an 05 6.0 drw with the right configuration, you can pull up to 19,000. I would try consulting the towing capacities ford offers on line. I will supply you with a link. But on this website the 350 regular cab drw with 6.0, torque shift, and 4.30 rear end will pull 19,200 lbs. , Supercab with same configuration 6.0, torque shift, 4.30 rear will pull 18,800 lbs., and crew cab with same config. to powertrain will pull 18,600lbs. Hope this helps. here's the link:

That is a lot of weight to pull. So I did some research...and found that prior to '05 models...the only thing that comes close to 18,000lbs is the '03 '04 F450 with PSD 4x2 model...with 4.88 gears...regular cab, DRW. Everything else points to the 17,000lbs area.

https://www.fleet.ford.com/showroom/...D_F350_550.pdf

The newer '05 and '06 have a higher capacity.

Hope this helps some...

Thank you so much. I love all this education. Bring it on. This is so helpful. It's my job to find this truck and I want to find a good one. Also I heard the highway patrol is or has been cracking down on overweight towing of recreation vehicles. So this is also a huge factor in the choice of this truck.

Sincerely
Patty Jr.

For that kind of weight, I'd be looking at an F450 or 550. Why max out a 350? Even with a diesel, you'd be close to the suspension limits. Just a thought.

One thing to remember. If you get over 26,000 lbs. total (which you probably will with that trailer and truck), you may be required to have a commercial driver's license. Just a thought and something you might want to look into. Good luck

I'd get a 450 or 550. Maybe evenm a 650 if the price is right

Okay, I max out the toyhauler 18000. What is the dry weight of the 450, 550, and larger. I gotta make plans.

Thanks much, I love to pic your brain.

Patty Jr.

In what configuration? (ie: Crew cab, Regular cab, 4x4, 4x2, Auto, Manual, etc...) These are make a difference with the dry weight of the vehicle.

Not knowing your budget, if you have the ability...I would recommend the F650. That is truly a GREAT machine.
