What is the gas mileage differnce between. A 2 wheel drive 302 2barrel. and a 460 4 barrel highboy. anyone know the horse power? and what if i put a 4 barrel on the 302?
A 302 will get around 10-16 MPG, depends on how you drive, and how many miles.
A 460 will get around 8-12 MPg and same thing, driving method and when rebuilt.
A 302 will only have around 120 HP stock, and a 4v carb might give you 5-10 HP, don't expect much.
A 460 will have around 220 HP or so, depends on year, and how many emissions is on it.
For the same price rebuild(parts cost) a 460 will give you a ton more power than a 302.
The 460 "high boy" is not stock, so with out knowing details on what motor it really is, and what, if anything has been done to it, it's really hard to say what hp it is producing. In stock form, if it's a '73-80's 460, it's making about 202-226, depending on what it exactly is (car motor or truck motor, what car it came out of if it's a car motor, ect...). If that is what it is, the milage numbers in the previous post are about right. Now if the motor is a stock '68 to '71, you could/should see better numbers, set up properly. 10-15 range depending on how and where it's driven.
Basically the same situation with the 302, but you didn't say what size truck that's in. It does make a little difference. In a 1/2 ton you could squeek 20 out of it, depending on the whole set up, from tires, to gears, to motor year, to tranny, ect... generally, your looking at about 12-15 though, subtract about 2 for a 3/4 ton, if for some reason someone put a 302 in a 3/4 ton. I'm not up on 302 hp numbers, but the 120hp number sounds good to me if it's a truck motor.
Oh, and if you replace a 2bbl with a vacuum secondary 4bbl and keep the secondary's closed most of the time, and the carb is tuned for that motor, and is the right size (500ish CFM), you should see an increase in MPG, but not likely much in hp.
I have a 302 in my F-100 2wd w/ about 6,000 miles on the engine, and perfect C4 trans, and a freshly rebuilt D44 rear axle w/ 3.50 gears and about 29" tires, and I get about 12-15MPG in town, and about 15-18 on the highway(I mostly drive in town, that's why I have the 3.50 gears).
i have a 79 f100 short box 2wd the running gear is not stock,335 hp rollerized 302,351 heads, cam is a roller cam (same lift/duration as a 69 302 boss),holley dual feed double pumper, edelbrock vic jr.intake, headman long tube headders,ac cobra 427 mufflers,c6 trans 3800 stall converter,9 inch power lock,2:73 gears.i get around 8 miles per gallon at best, when driving with an egg on the gas peddle. that NEVER happens!!! when the truck was stock 302,c4,9 inch, etc. i got around 15 mpg in town,20 on highway with the cruise on.
well shes has a ton of power not sure what was done. i am going to guess 5-10mpg but when i got he truck i remeber going4-5 hours on one tank. all higway one trip. does it get better if you drive it longer on the highway. my buddy said it does. but hes been wrong usally. we all like to talk.
