I have a 1997 F-150 4x4 4.6L, I noticed a leak in one of the fuel lines. How hard is it to replace it? Looks like you have to take off exhaust and skid plate(s)? Do you have to buy a special tool to take the lines apart?
Which fuel line is leaking and where?
If it's above the transmission it's quite a pain to replace.
You need a special tool to remove the lines. It's the same tool as you would need for replacing your fuel filter and is available at most parts stores.
Yeah its a hard line leaking near the trans/torque converter. Looks like the exhaust has to come off and a cross member? Well hopefully thats all that has to come off.
From Ford you can only buy the fuel supply and return lines in one piece. To replace them you usually have to remove the transmision crossmember and lower the transmission down. I've seen people actually remove the transmission because they figured that was easier. It's not a really fun job
Let us know how it goes.
I just got done replacing the fuel and return lines on a 98 f-150 4.6 4x4 its not to bad. Start by taking the 2 nuts off outside of the frame rail 10mm, and then disconnect lines at the fuel filter. Remove the front driveshaft shield and index mark the front driveshaft flange yoke and the front axle companion flange. Remove the four driveshaft slip yoke to front drive axle companion flange bolts. You really dont have to remove the driveshaft flange yoke to transfer case bolts i didnt but you may want to.Ok now you need to use a 13mm stubby and reach all the way up to the top of the transmission and remove the 2 bolts holding the fuel line bracket or you can just squeeze the fuel lines one at a time and push up to release them that way you can leave the bracket in place, that bracket didnt come with the fuel line assembly on mine. Now theres another bracket you can either remove or pull the lines out of it and its located on the top of bell housing all together different than the other one. Now disconnect fuel lines at the fuel rail. Now you can bring the whole assembly out with a little twisting. I hope this helps.
Well, after taking it to the dealer and hoping it was a recall from 2000 I found that it wasnt and wasted 40 bucks. Ive already started what you said to do, so I guess I must be on the right page-well Im not wasting anymore time. A leaky 4.6 still gets better mileage than a 78 351M. Thank you to all that replied, you guys are lifesavers, and FORD is a killer.

Reason: mispelling and left out info
By the way before I start to get happy (disassembly) how much are the new line(s) do the fuel and return come seperate. Or should I stick to the old rule change them both or you will shoot yourself in the end. Thanks guys.
