replace the fuel pump in the tank that gets filled when its not supposed to.
Whats happening is the built in check valve thats supposed to close and prevent this has failed.

I would call Ford and check the recall. I've heard mixed reports that its expired, good for 15 years/150,000 miles, and good until fixed. Its worth the free phone call....

You mean If Input 2 new fuel pumps on it that that will take care of the problem?
I heard I need to replace the fuel preassure regulator.
Then another person said I need to replace the duel function fuel resvoir what ever that is. danny

I have the same problem with my 90 4.9 .... just when my front tank is full it won't pump .... after I siphoned 4 gallons or so out the pump started working again .... now I have to make sure it doesn't get to full from the backflow from the other tank.

'91 didn't have the DFR. Your system incoporates all the valves in the FDM(Fuel Delivery Module), which had the pump and sending unit all in one. As what Papa Time said, say your front tank fills up and overflows while you have the rear tank selected. The FDM has a check valve in it. Fuel pressure is applied to the valve when you select that tank, the valve opens and allows the unused fuel from the engine to return. When you de-energize that tank the valve is supposed to close because you no longer have pressure applied to it. Normally it's only noticeable on the front tank because it's closest to the return path.

Well then What does it take to repair this problem? Should I use the front tank or the back one? I just bought this truck and only put 5 gal in each tank. Will a 1995 fuel tank work if I swap them. Which fuel pump should I replace. Thanks Danny

Use the one that doesn't fill up. Replace the pump in the the tank that fills up, you don't have to change the whole tank, just the FDM. If it's the front tank it's pretty easy, just burn of as much fuel as you can, losen the 2 retaining straps til the nuts are flush with the ends of the bolts, tip the tank down. On top you'll see the 4 pin connector and 2 fuel lines. Disconnect the lines and the connector. On outer part of the circle, you'll see a ring with some tabs sticking up. Take a hammer and a punch and tap on the tabs moving the ring in a counter-clockwise rotation until the ring pops out(about 1/2" movement). Then try and lift the FDM out, it may take a little prying to get it loose. Becareful of fuel that may still be in the unit when you take it out. There should also be what's called a Quad ring(square shaped o-ring) underneath the lip of the FDM. Your replacement one should come with a new one.

My truck has the same problem,1988 F250. Rear tank feeds into the front tank. I know you are looking for solutions to fix the problem but keep in mind that you can continue to drive your truck this way for as long as you like. I never wanted to pay to have mine fixed so I continue to drive it this way. I run the front tank first and at about a 130 miles I switch to the rear. I only get about 50 miles from the rear tank because the majority of the fuel is pumped back into the front tank. I dont have a working gas guage either so it means I'm always watching the trip odometer. Been doing this for 11 years.

I just just got the truck running this week Ive only drove it 10 miles.I replaced the engine with a 1977 lincoln roller cam and installed all the 91 parts on it after I over hauled it.
Then I done away with the Junk automatic and Installed a 1995 5 speed.
the guy I bought it from told me about the tank problem it had but didn't tell me which tank it was. I have a wrecked 1995 f150 so I thought I would just change tanks.
Tomorrow were gona change them if it don't rain. Thanks all Will let you know.
