Hey guys, I'm new to this forum, my dad has a 2000 F350 PSD. I was wanting to do the quick mod before we drive from ontario to alberta, just wondering if this filter would make the turbo jump, he is just running stock exhaust and pulling a 3 horse gooseneck trailer. I want the truck to be reliable and no turbo jump. Maybe it would be best to keep it stock for now? any info would be great thanks.
Sorry I should have said turbo flutter. I searched it and alot of guys are installing the wicked wheel after putting exhaust and the kwik mod. The flutter came under heavy load. Any more people with info would be great.
actually you probably mean compressor surge, and you probably get some of that without the filter but with the filter A. your gonna be able to hear it more, and B. yes it will be a litte more prevelant because of the increased airflow but I have the filter and a partial exhaust upgrade with a chip and although none would be best I don't get enough that I am concered about the turbo even without a wicked wheel although one is probably going to be one of my next upgrades.
Basically I am saying you will be fine running the Kwik filter on your truck and won't have adverse side affects from it with the exception of maybe a little more power and possibly better fuel economy.
Both I use mine a lot for running around hauling parts, commuting to work, and then during the summer for towing my race truck. and other stuff for friends as the need arises.
Cool, It's too bad the truck is my dad's i'm into modding it way more than he is, but i think he'll let me do some of the minor mods, he's not really getting great fuel mileage right now, the truck has 4:10 in it, It's a crew cab short box dully lariate and it's the liminted eddition, it's a pretty cool lookin truck. not too many of them around here.
What you'll hear prevalently will be a whooooosshh on shifts, especially into overdrive, or when letting off the throttle quickly. This is excess boost flowing back out of the air filter (the RPMs drop on the upshift, and the engine can't make use of that built up boost, so it goes back the way it came). I've heard it described as the turbo sighing after some hard work. It does this stock, as well, but you can't really hear it. It's normal and not damaging, as far as I know.
The noise you want to avoid is a psst-psstt-psssttt-psst under steady load, usually when towing. You can see it as a fluctuating or jumpy boost needle if you have a boost gauge. This is bad for the turbo, and is what folks use the wicked wheel or ATS housing to cure. Whether this is called compressor surge or stall is still a mystery to me after all the threads here and elsewhere on the subject... but it's not good, regardless of its name.
Hope I summed it up okay... if anyone sees any errors I made or can add to it, please do.
That's exactly how i heard it described in some of the otherthreads. I ordered the filter through NAPA. I was surprised that the part number was the same as you guys were using. The filter does cost alot more here though, around 50 bucks, but that's alot better than spending 300 on a K&N system. The truck doesn't have a boost guage either, but i think it would be a good idea to put in a set of guages. If anyone has any suggestions about the turbo surge let me know. thanks
I have the Kwik filter on my stock 7.3l. The only other thing I've done is disable the waste gate. I've got about 4000 miles on it now with some pulling and some around town driving. I have yet to head anything like what is described here as flutter or surge. And I did try to listen for it for a little while because I was concerned that it would happen.
Ok, thanks alot for the info and the quick replies, this information has been really helpfull. Now i need to find a place in ontario that will supply me with a sweet exhaust. Thanks again guys

Oh, how do you disable the waste gate?
Don't, it will dramatically raise the drive pressure on your turbo and cost you in MPG. Several people have documented as much as 3 MPG decrease when they run with no wastegate on the 99-03 trucks. I read that over on the 'stop.
But if you insist.......... unplug the pressure line from the wastegate control canister located on the upper rear area of the intake housing on the turbo. Plug the line with an appropriate screw or bolt.
Well i don't think it would be a good idea either if it lowers MPG. That really is the only reason for the mods to this truck. I'm not getting very good fuel mileage right now, I think it might have something to do with the winter fuel too? but any suggestions about getting better fuel mileage would be great. I'm getting 11-13 MPG right now.
