Not much further to go on my truck! I had the motor rebuilt at a good local shop here. It has taken a while to get it back in simply due to a lack of time on my part, but I'm probably a few hours away from starting it up!! I am quite excited. I've been without my truck for at least 6 months... I'll post pics soon!
Not much left to go... All the major stuff is done. As far as I can tell.. here's the list of what remains:
Bolt carb on; place top radiator hose on (got the wrong hose)and fill radiator; install distributor, coil, and wires; Install alternator, brackets and belts; Fill er' up with oil... start it up!
James, I don't know how you feel about it, but I like to mix distilled water with my antifreeze. I keep it mixed 50/50 in a marked jug if I ever need to add any.
Pour the first gallon each of water and antifreeze in and half of the next antifreeze into the just poured one and fill both back up with distilled water. Most groceries carry the water for about $.75 a gallon. That way you aren't adding minerals and other junk that can clog the water system in your new engine. The mixture should look brand new even after a few years of use.

In the cool still quiet of night, you can hear chevies rusting away.
I pre-oil the engine. Spin the oil drive shaft with a drill and turn the engine over without spark plugs. This flushes crap out of the oil system with out combustion pressure and primes the carburetor. Double check everything. Have you planned on breaking in the cam. I use water on initial start up. It is cheaper if you have a leak and easier to clean up. The engine will run warm, maybe hot until you break in the cam and readjust the timing. Then shut it off and check the belts, look for leaks, double check everything and add 50/50 mix coolant and distilled water like John says. Having some of that mix around is a good idea. I bought a flexable 1/4 inch socket extension the other day in the cheap tool bin at my local store. This fits perfectly on the ARP oil pump drive shaft and into the chuck on my 3/8ths drill.
