I was successful in ID'ing my trans in the 70 F100. Just in time, car craft had an article about ford transmissions and how to quickly ID them by the pan shape. It is a C6.
I would very much like to put a shift kit (RV setting) and a new filter in it. Summit lists filters for an early C6 and a later one. (I don't have the years handy).
How do I tell if I have an early C6 or a late one? Remember, the truck has a 302 EFI swapped in, so there is a chance the C6 isn't original either!
Hi geoaigel, you can look at the pan and measure the depth. Trannies made 66 to about 74 have shallow pans 1"to 1 1/2" deep. 75+ models have deeper 1 3/4"to 2" pans. 4x4 pans have a dropped center that is 3" deep. If you email me KENNETHL6@prodigy.net I'll send you a JPEG photo of the pans.
Kenneth is right on the pans. If you convert to a 4x4 style you will also need the extension tube specific to that filter. It alows you to pick up fluid from the bottom of the pan sump. Otherwise it will suck air.
Thanks for the info guys. I will measure tomorrow. Sounds easy enough to determine by just measuring. One of the nice things with trucks is that you can get underneath them without a jack!
Will let you know what I find. From the top of my head I think it has a deep pan. That would go with the modern looking kickdown cable that is attahced to the throttle body on the EFI motor...
Went and measured this morning. Definitely is about 2" deep. So I guess I have a later C6! Did they come in 92? The 302 EFI is a 92 engine. Maybe someone just dropped the whole setup in there.
