First, sounds like transmission or maybe loose something
First and second gear I can hear what can only be typed as a pinging or tapping. When towing it is more pronounced. With rear axle off the ground there is NOTHING. out of gear, either at stop or placed in nuetral down the road I cannot get it to happen. Seems like it only happens under a torgue load.
Flywheel flexing?
No mater what I cannot get it to happen, at least loud enough over road noise, once shifted into third gear.
Second, when running 55+ I get an oblong vibration out of the rear.
Its not per tire rotation as its takes a couple seconds to repeat.
During the trans test with the rear axle/tires off the ground I noticed the passenger side tire run out with a slight oblong roll. Like a bulge in the tire.
However, this vibration does not happen on fast as that would think it would happen at 55+mph.
Could the vibration be a bad bearing?
might want to check the u joints in the rear driveshaft. just replaced mine trying to track down a vibration while braking...changed rear rotors, still there, took the drive shaft in out, no vibration...took it in to have shaft balanced, specialty shop said it was not likely the cause of the vibration and that the u joints appeared to be in good shape. i had them replace the joints and the shaft was very close to perfect balance and trueness wise. no vibration now...well, except the vibration under hard acceleration, havent tracked that one down yet. point being, slightly worn u joints can cause all kinds of "funny" sounds and vibrations and yet look and feel like they are fine...
may not be it, but remove the rear shaft (10 min) and take her down the road in 4 wheel. if the noises are gone you got a winner, if not, little effort expended and no money. just be sure to mark the shaft so you get it back on the way it came off.
