Compatible Rear Ends?

I've got a super budget '58 F-100, I recently blew the rear diff and possibly the axles. So rather than gamble on the axles and just replace the diff I am looking to swap out the whole rear end. I don't have any money to spend so I am looking for a junkyard 8" or preferably a 9" anybody know any compatible rear end that would be an easy swap? The 9" that's in there now I'm pretty sure is 55" from backing plate to backing plate. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Excellent reference section found a lot of good info there, now does anyone know where the *CHEAP* salvage yards in the Los Angeles area? Memory lane wants $450 for a junker rear end!

don't know how close these guys are to Los Angeles, but the company that owns the local pick n pull here in Edmonton, Canada owns a bunch of yards all over the states. at least here they are very reasonably priced (they used to have sales on rear ends for $25, have pulled about 4 or 5 9" rears with trac-locs during these sales). also got the housing from a 72 ford for my 60 ford. fit like it came from my truck (and it had the 31 spline axles)

they look to be mostly in northern cali, check out their website at picknpull.com for locations in california.

Jeez, 450 bucks for a junkyard rear end, I picked up my disc brake 3.73 explorer 8.8 for my 54 for 150 bucks, but I'm also in the midwest and knew a guy that worked there.

I'd reconsider rebuilding your current rear end. You can probably get it rebuilt for less than $450 and then you will know it's in good shape. You never know what you're getting with a used rear. Maybe it's not in as bad a shape as you think. It takes a LOT of abuse to kill a nine inch.

Red Eyed Devil -

I notice by your profile that you are somewhere in California. I am in SoCal (Riverside). I have the 3.00:1 pumpkin and axles out of a 57-59 Ford 9-inch that I swapped out of my 56. They are in excellent condition and looking for a home. Email or PM me.

This could be your day.

Well that pumpkin was literally driven into the ground, drive shaft got blown off the diff while cruising at about 50 on the highway, barely made it to the shoulder. Heat build up blew my brake line as well. I can't really afford a rebuild at the moment and just need to get it back on the road as it is (was) my daily driver and the only vehicle I own.
