I'm new to this forum but not new to Ford PSD's, I just sold a 97 F250 that had 262,000 on it, a great truck. I'm looking to repalce it, I would like to have ya'lls opinion as to stay with an 2002 or 2003 7.3 or to look for an 03 or 04 with the 6.0. I sure like things that are tried and true so I think I know which direction I would like to go in but would like the opinions of the board as well. Thanks in advance.
You can have my vote for the 7.3, Awsome motor. Durable, reliable, been around along time. It dosn't produce the numbers that the 6.0's do but thats an easy fix. From what I here the later 6.0's aren't riddled with the problems they once were, I think the fuel economy might be alittle better. One thing I like about mine (2000) is not having an EGR system, Cat, etc. The only downside I can think of for an 02-03 7.3 might be PMR conn. rods instead of forged. And I'm sure youll get plenty of other opinions as well.
I have both (although the 6.0L is an early and not the supposedly-better newer ones). Power is good in both engines (7.3 really good with my new DP chip). I'd vote for the 7.3 for proven reliability. I also personally prefer slightly broke-in trucks instead of finding every manufacturer's defect right out of the box with a huge truck payment. JMO, but the newer 6.0s are having their share of problems too (probably still due to the fact that the motor wasn't built by Navistar IH to put out 325HP...fix the old problems and find the new weakest link)...my neighbor's '06 has been to the dealer for engine issues 3 times in 3 months...I just smile because we went thru the same with our 6.0 but it seems to have settled down (crossing-fingers).
Both are great engines, I love them both. My dad has a 2000 7.3 F350, and I have a 2006 6.0 F350. To put it plain and simple, my truck kicks my dads ***. Wether it is pulling power, acceleration, quieteness, and plain drivability, mine blows his out of the water. Not to say his isn't a great truck, because it is, but after driving his for 5 years and now driving mine, I can make a pretty good comparison. He bought his new and the only problems he has had is an exhaust manifold leak at 50,000 miles.
I bought mine last September and have been nothing but pleased. My truck is smoother, quieter, faster, pulls better, and gets nearly 5mpg better mileage. The power with my 6.0 is unreal, I bought the Bullydog downloader and installed it, what a difference. My truck is faster than my wife's 2004 Mustang GT. Not that you need a truck to be fast, but why not???
I pulled a 20ft car trailer with a 65 Mustang on it over the pass last weekend and could accelerate up the steepest part of the grade up to 95mph before I let off, without getting high EGT temps. This new 6.0 blows me away. The 5 speed tranny is awesome as well. My truck has not had any problems with it.
Now the only question for you is are you willing to spend the extra money to get the better truck???
ps. I had to give some positive 6.0 feedback in the 7.3 forum...
Now this is a 7.3 forum so naturally 7.3 will out here. Post this same thread over on the 6.0 forum. A lot off those owners over there have come from a 7.3 so that would be a fair comparison.

i quote myself, from a poll in the 6.0 section "how do you rate your 6.0"
extremely unhappy. yes it's me with the '04 F-550 lemon. the engine blew AGAIN monday. towed in to the stealership, same problem as the other two times before. at the dealership today, they printed out the record of the truck's ELEVEN visits to the shop for repairs. here it is...
1- mileage 5851- the engine was replaced, due to #3 burning out. new crate engine and wiring harness dropped in, back in action. took 6 weeks.
2-mileage ~6500- Intercooler replaced, due to perimeter seal blowing out.
3-mileage 8928- hot side CAC tube replaced with new boot, due to it kept blowing off.
5-mileage-13186-second engine replaced, again, due to the same problems as before.
6-mileage-15679-transmission service, new ??(no other relevant info)
7-mileage-18493- turbo replaced on the third engine, due to being carboned up and the vanes sticking.
8-mileage-19953- transmission completely replaced due to shudder in reverse, also replace rear axle pinion seal due to leakage, safety recall problems, and reflash
9-mileage-21581- EBP valve replaced OBD RE??
10-mileage-22915-turbo replaced again on that same engine, due to carboned up again and chuffing.
11-mileage-23626- dipstick replaced
and now, at 24232 miles, it is going to the boneyard, my dad called up FMC customer service, and he got the ball rolling on the relacement vehicle. it's going to be a brand new 06 or 07 depending on when we get it, and it's going to be just like the one we have now. the aluminum dump body, the plow setup, the salter and wiring, toolboxes, everything added will be stripped off to make the bare Cab and chassis, and will be put on the new one. $61000 of trouble. but the '06 will be sweet.
and, forgot to mention my 2006 F-250 work truck with only 2700 miles is also having the vanes sticking in either open or closed positions, and that will get checked out too. CEL on.
we just got the ball rolling on the 06 replacement truck.
