Driving with O/D on....

I was wondering..i have a 92 f150 4x4 truck with an automatic 4 speed tranny. I was wondering if it is ok to drive the truck around town with the little "o/d off" light lit up or should it be so the light is not lit when drving around... Thanks

Sounds like you have the E4OD. I drive in overdrive all of the time. It's absolutely fine for it.

depends on your speed if you are going to be driving between 30-40 a lot then shut the OD off. if you are going to be going up some hills at around 35-40 shut it off. but if it is flat and you keep a continuous speed above 35 turn the OD back on.

Basiclly whenever your speed drops to 34 it will kick out of OD.

Damn he is good lol. Mine kicks out at like 35 or so, but it wont go back in unless its above 40.

I don't worry about taking it out of OD. They say to take it out when you're towing, but that's just because the chances of it shifting out of OD and back in are a lot higher. As long as it doesn't shift out of OD while you're towing at all, you should be ok to leave it in. Shifting just creates heat and causes premature wear on the clutches.

Leave the od on (light off) unless you are pulling a trailer about 55mph. just keep it from shifting with a heavy load behind it.

My tranny guy has been in business for 30 years and recommended that i turn light on when cruising thru town [lights, stop and go,etc.].These trannys don't need to shift back and forth from 3rd.to 4th.any more than necessary. Also on the back roads of southern Oregon,i get the same or better gas milage with light on.Go figure!4th.is great on freeway tho!

Ok, ill take that into considerration, i think one of the reason my tranny is constanly messing up is because whenever im exiting the highway or decreasing my speed in great amounts. i thro it into 1st and let it downshift. I am sure this is probably bad for it, but its a habit i have.

I wouldn't recommend that! When i hit an off ramp,i push the button and let 3rd.gear slow me down, then leave it in 3rd.till i leave town.Any Ford auto. trans.with overdrive is weaker than a 3 speed auto.from what i've been told.Only Ford tranny i've ever had problems with was an AOD in a '90 Mustang and 4th.gear went out.My C-6's in my older trucks have been bulletproof!
