truck engines

I have two 69 F100's. one is a long bed custom cab, with manual everything. The other is a short bed Ranger with P/B,P/S,A/C,a dome and cargo light (factory). both engines are identical as far as the intake manifold goes. I dont know the engine size of the 2 but I do know that Ford told me that the long bed came with a 2 BC 429 V8 and the short bed came with a 4 BC 429 V8. when I heard that I almost had a heart attack. I was looking for a 429 to but in the truck after I bought them. I was looking in the 69-76 car Chiltons book and noticed the my intake does not look like a 429, they both look like a 390. The water neck is in front, not on top of the manifold and the intake bolts are at a 45 deg. angle. both engines have a 2 Barrel Carb on them now. when I bought the short bed, I was told it had a 390 in it (it has 390 emblems on the sides of the fenders). I will try the valve cover bolt count but any other help would be very
helful.

Jack, Since Ford never put a 429 in a pickup, scratch that one. Do the spark plugs look like this \\//, then you very likely have a 360, could be a 390 but more likely a 360.

Someone pulled one over on you. The only V8 engines available from Ford in the 69 pickups were the 302, 360 and 390.

I was checking my engine with pics of intakes i found on the internet and there both 390's or 360's. when I would that out my dreams got shattered. I really want a a 429. the spark plugs look like \\// that. Thanks for the info. Does anyone know where I can get a tri-power intake for the 390? Or would a 750 4 BC give me better preformance?

Jack, I think there may be one on Ebay right now. I might suggest that you read the FE forum on this site and bone up on the engine. You would need to build the engine from the bottom up to handle either of those items mentioned. 600 CFMs is about all of the carb even a mildly built 390 needs.

good luck

A Ford tripower will not port match to most '66 and later engines, need your head numbers to confirm that.

If it did match, expect to shell out at least $1500 for everything.

JMO I think you would be ahead of the game with just a nice 4 bbl. instead.

The single 4v will give much better driveability. The tri-power will just look cooler. It may acctually hinder HP rather than help. The carb you use will depend on cam, intake, acctual engine displacement, and some other small things. The cam & intake are the big factors in carb size. Check out the FE forum it is a big help usually. Least 'til I get to typing. LOL
