New Truck. Fuel tank is too big! Whats up?
New F250 super duty with turbo diesel, tourqe shift trans. Crew cab (full 4 doors) with short bed configuration.
I just filled my tank for the first time. It's supposed to hold 29 gallons. I put in 29.5! The fuel alarm did not yet go off gauge still said 3/16th tank left. Everything that came with the truck, the salesman and the specs on the computer all say 29 gallons only!
I think they gave me the 38 gallon tank. We measure one of trucks with a known 38 gallon tank...the dimensions are the same.
Anyone have any similar questions?
I don't want to run it out of fuel.
Thanks,
Tedd

shortbeds have 29 gallon and long beds have the 38 gallon.
it is an approximate amount. there is a vapor area for the gas models because gas needs it, diesel fuel doesn't.
so if you fill up to the top and dribble the fuel in slowly, you can get about 30 gallons in approxmatly.
there is the harpoon mod which all it does is remove the vent tube from sticking inside the tank (or something like that) so you can fill it to the top faster without the nozzle constantly tripping off or fueling slowly.

Diesel vehicles do not have any vapor handling systems at all to my knowledge. There is a vent on the top of the tank when you have a diesel and that's it.
The tank is definitely bigger than the advertised capacity for the Crew Cabs with short boxes. I have an 04 with a bone stock tank. One time I had 525 miles on the trip and put 28.2 gallons in it. My low fuel light never came on. Now, look, if it really had 29 available, that means it only had .8 gallons in there? That is below 1/32 of a tank! The light should have been on, and I could swear that I had read somewhere that the light is supposed to come on when your computer thinks you have less than 75 miles left on the tank. I know it works, too, because I ran a heavy trailer to about 350 miles and the light was glowing brightly.
