1976 high boy conversation?

hey i have a 1976 high boy 360 in er with the narrow frame with the 2 1/2 inch rear springs and i was just wondering what id have to do to change the dana 60 rear end to a dana 70 from a f350? like are the points on the axle where the blocks and ubolts bolt around the same distance? as the dana 60 for my truck ?

If you get a Dana 70 from a 70's model F-350 it will bolt right in.

you'll have to swap the blocks and maybe some spirings to get the height correct to match the highboy's , or just swap all the springs from the highboy.

It looks like a bolt in, but it's not. The dana 70 pads need to be cut off and turned to get the correct pinion angle or you can use shims. Dana 70 uses a 1350 U-joint and the driveline will be 3/4" shorter. You can put your 1310 dana 60 yoke on the 70 though. You will need custom made u-bolts and axle plates from a chevy 14 bolt.

The slip in the driveshaft will typically take care of the difference but it's something that needs to be double checked once it's all together.

Moving the perches is a relatively simple job. If you don't have the welder you can still remove them yourself with an angle grinder and then take it to a shop for welding. This shouldn't cost more than about $20 to do.

Is your D60 bad? If not leave it alone. You wont gain much from switching to a D70.

A dana 70 is quite a bit of an upgrade from the typical 16 spline 4x4 dana 60 rear. Seen alot of 60's scattered, seen dozens of 14 bolts scattered and cracked in half, but have yet to see a dana 70 or a sterling rear fail when it wasn't being grossly abused (like a turbo 3208 cat making 1200 ft/lbs towing 30K with a 70 rear). The main benefit of the 70 is it's housing and larger bearings. It's pretty easy for me to toss around a 60 or 14 bolt. I can't lift a 70. Between the sterling and the 70, the 70 is considerably cheaper to buy parts for and they're dirt cheap to equip with the bulletproof powerlock posi.

Uh . . . okay To the left, a 35 spline 1.5" axle (what the D70 uses) and on the right a 30 spline D60 axle. And you want to tell me you won't gain much?

On top of the axle shafts, which are important for torque capacity, the axle tubes, ring gear and bearings on the D70 are much larger than on the D60. It's a far superior axle. AverageJoe is not joking when he says that D60's break all over the place.

rear 60's are worthless for high torque situations
