You'll need a large, but short, crescent wrench to loosen the nut that attaches the exhaust line to the EGR valve.

You'll need a deep-well 10mm socket to remove the bolts that hold the EGR to the throttle body.

I believe the bolts that mount the DPFE are 10mm, but I have never removed mine, so I'm not 100% sure.

Replacing these two items is easy. Have fun.

Of course, the question of WHY should come up.

DPFE sensors are very well known for failures.

EGR valves fail but it is pretty rare. Usually, they are replaced as part of a misdiagnosis of EGR flow problems.

Well I dont have any codes, the only reason im doing this is because my truck pings alot under acceleration and if I use 87 octane it gets worse. I was told to check these 2 items, but if im not throwing any codes im not sure if I wanna spend the money and is not going to resolve my problem.

I would take the throttle body & upper intake "elbow" off & clean them (especially the EGR ports in the "elbow" before replacing any parts. I did this a couple weeks ago, & it reduced the pinging in my '97 Expy.

The 2 gaskets that I had to replace were less than $6 total at O'Reilly Auto Parts.

Clean your MAF sensor with an electrical cleaner before you do anything. I bet that fixes your problem. Do a search on cleaning your MAF sensor.

It took a couple of hours. A basic list of tools needed is as follows:

1. Can of Seafoam Deep Creep to loosen any stuck bolts. Also use the Deep Creep to help remove the vacuum hoses from the throttle body. Break the hose loose from the connection just enough to squirt some Deep Creep in there. Wait a couple minutes & the hoses will slide right off.

2. 8mm socket & a few various extensions to remove the bolts holding the "elbow" to the intake manifold. This same socket removes the throttle body from the "elbow"

3. Can of B-12 Chemtool, or any carb/intake cleaner. Spray everything down good, then wipe off any excess.

4. Roll of disposable shop towels.

5. Nitrile gloves, to keep all the chemicals off your digits.

6. A good shoplight, so you can see what you're doing.

7. throttle body gasket, upper intake "elbow" gasket, EGR mounting gasket

If you're going to do this, I suggest removing the EGR valve first. You're not supposed to use any chemicals on the EGR. Everything I've read says solvents will destroy the pintle in the EGR.

Don't forget to clean all your mounting surfaces before putting everything back together.......... & don't drop anything into the intake.

www.RockAuto.com has photographs of almost all the parts mentioned, EGR valve, MAF sensor, etc., which might make repair tips easier to follow. Click the More Info button next to the part in our catalog to see the picture.
