Boy! that was a deadly first day of the season. 6 men were lost. I don't know if the money would be worth the risk. I guess it depends on how desperate you are. Tough way to make a living. The conditions in combo with the sleep depravation kind of set you up to lose a couple of guys a season. Seems to me someone could come up with a better boat design for those types of conditions. Better crab traps also for that matter. Cheaper to lose men then build a better boat I guess.
I know they're starting the new season soon. They break season down into two parts...first is the king crab and later it's the ophilio (sp) crab. The Big Valley was lost on the first day of the ophilio(sp) crab season.
Anyone else notice that with the 'assigned' quotas, instead of the derby-style fishing, there doesn't seem to be the sense of urgency, or competition like last season?
Yeah, they cut the number of boats, and gave them 3 weeks to catch their quota. Last season was what, 3 or 4 days long. It does make sense though that if they lowered the number of boats, to give them longer to fish.
The one captain...the religous one... was in tears at the end of the season....he made some speech about the new system being corrupt, wrong, evil etc.
Do you think this season will be as interesting to watch without the race aspect?
Yea, Dirty Jobs is a good show too. I forget the Guys name, Mike? Anyway, he's pretty funny and likes to say poo all the time. That always makes me laugh.
