what oil weight

for all you guys getting 18-20mpg on the highway, what weight oil are you running? 15w40?
I had my first oil changed at the dealership cause it was free, but they put 15w40 in my truck, and now i 14.5mpg-highway compared to 17.5mpg highway with the oil from the factory.
I can't wait to get to the next oil change interval to go to a 10w30 or 10w40

Read your owners manual. There is a section that specifies what weight oil to use depending on the ambient temperature.

Oil will not hinder your mileage as much as you are stating. Idle time in cold weather, how you drive city-highway or quality of fuel in general will make a bigger change in MPG than oil.

I don't know for a fact but I was told that the original oil from the factory was the lighter weight 10w-30. If you tow or drive in temps higher than 50 degrees the recommended weight is 15w-40. I was in wyoming and had my oil changed at the dealer in 90 degree temps and they put in the 10w-30 which I immediately had them remove and put back the 15w-40 because I was towing a 34' trailer in extreme heat conditions. My mpg solo is running around 16-17.

Just an oil change? Did they do anything else to your truck? Air filter change? Anything else?

I just had my first oil change this week. I filled up right after it so I will be able to see what, if any difference it makes. Geez, I am glad I don't go to the dealer to get my oil changed on a regular basis. Oil change and rotate tires was $135 of which the oil change was $103. Glad it was only once there.

thats robbery, I can get my 7.3 oil chnaged for around $55 at valvoline oil change and they do a good job, you can also print off $5 off coupons online,
they do all the diesel ambulances in my area so I know they know what they are doing, I've tried jiffy lube a few times and had terrible experiences there..

The truck stops are usually your best bet for better prices since they sell in higher volumes....where you been buying fuel? How do you calculate fuel mileage? Make sure you fill the tank the same each time, this has a big impact on calculating fuel.

I've posted in some other threads how dealership prices can vary greatly. I pay $58 for an oil change at my dealership (Moto 15/40). I priced another dealer in the area an they wanted over $90. But $103 is the highest I have heard of - and outrageous!

I run Delcac 1300 15W/40 in my 04/04 F250 SC SB FX4 TS. My average over the last month or so of combined city/highway driving is 17.1 mpg. The range per tank is from 16.3 to 17.4 mpg with a total of 3222 miles and 188.5 gallons of fuel. I run 67.5 mph on the freeway, and my daily route is 4 miles city, 20 miles two lane roads, and 50 miles freeway.

The biggest drop in mileage I see is when I am fighting a head wind and when the truck idles for a while. I had 19.0 mpg trip average the other day (over 37 miles) then I stopped into the local pizza place and left the truck running. 7 minutes later, that same trip average had dropped to 17.5 mpg.
