I heard from someone in the industry today that Ford is coming out with a "Boss" engine to compete with the "Hemi". Has anyone else heard of this? If so what might it involve?
if true, it would either be a bs 4.6 or 5.4. They would throw a supercharger on it. I hope ford doesn't do something stupid like that though. The Boss is history as far as i'm concerned and so is the hemi. The new rehacked small blocks are a disgrace.
I love the idea of a new style boss! If they build it though, they cant half assed it. Has to me reminiscent of the old ones, it would sell, and kick ***!
What you've got to remember when comparing the BOSS nameplate and engines to Hemi's is this. The Hemi was made famous by the 426 hemi, which is disgraced by the small engine they have today.
The BOSS, was also offered in a BOSS 302, or BOSS 351. So a smaller BOSS engine offered isn't a stupid idea, or a disgrace to the name.

While I agree the pseudo-hemi is marketing, the ORIGINAL hemi introduced in the 1950's was in the 300 cubic inch range.
And whether we want to accept it or not, the lil' 5.7 hemi has as much HP (if not more) than the vaunted 426 hemi of old.......comparing net to net.
I knew about the original hemispherical head engine that dodge had in a big family car in the 50's. But people didn't call them hemi's. It was just another motor at the time.
Didnt the 426 have something like 425 horsepower stock? I am sure the 5.7 doesnt have that. Not sure what you meant net to net though...
You're correct........but the 425 was Gross. After '71 the HP was measured net. That 425 HP would be very close to the 345HP of the 5.7 if measured the same way.
The 6.1 liter Chrysler "hemi" is rated at 425 HP net in the SRT 8 Charger, Magnum, and 300. Which Ford engine is rated at 425 HP net w/o a blower?
BUT!!!!...........the 5.4 in Australia is right at 400HP and was 385 here in the 2000 Cobra R......with nearly 40 cubes less.
Was discussing it briefly with Fred (Big350) and while the 5.4 may be RPM challenged concerning longevity, with Variable Valve timing and different runner lenghts I think another 30 HP should not be a stretch.
