New guy from Houston.

Hey everyone. I currently own a 2004 Mustang GT and the tranny blew on it a few days ago. Most likely because of the Kenne bell blower I put on it. Anyways.....I've decided to buy a 00+ 7.3L Powerstroke sometime soon because im going to sell the Mustang. Could those of you who own one please tell me how good the trucks are in relation to maintance and amount of miles I can expect out of the motor. I've been looking through ebay and such...and most of the ones i find have 140k+ on them. Is this somthing I should worry about? Once I get the truck....I plan on doing some sort of exhaust & chip. Maybe some of you could point me in the right direction for the good mods.

Thanks in advance,
Daniel

Sorry about the Tang. Good choice on the 7.3 PSD. I think if you are willing to travel a little you should find some trucks with lower mileage. Mine is a 99 and I have 113K on it. Many others here have less. 140K shouldn't be a problem either. Some will tell you it is only getting broke in good. Look around a bit, I sure some folks here will help on finding one. As far as this goes:

"Maybe some of you could point me in the right direction for the good mods"

That is going to get some response. Welcome

Welcome to FTE...

sorry to hear about the mustang. if you plan on modding the truck past 350RWHP, you want a 1999.5-EARLY 2001 model. these have a stronger connecting rod design, and those with 2001-2003's have to worry about the connecting rods getting overstressed and eventually making a nice porthole in the side of the block. that said, i would go for it, if you see everything cosmetic in good shape. with careful routine maintenance on a good schedule, these engines can easily go 350,000-400,000 miles before needing a major overhaul. i would suggest finding the history of it as far as shop visits, take an oil sample and have it analyzed, and also get the coolant tested. if all of these come back good, i would go for it if price is right.
as far as exhaust,intake,chip,etc.

exhaust- 4" mandrel-bent turbo-back systems are all that is needed to safely lower EGT's. some go with duals for looks and sound, (i know i am eventually), and some go extreme with 5" exhaust. they call it the "cannon club", and im sure those who are members will be around soon to promote it. talk to them enough, they will give you 5" envy. the basic reason for going to 5" over 4" is for sound, but some claim further EGT reduction (exhaust gas temperature). EGT leads me to the next thing you should have, and that is GAUGES. most have a-pillar setups, and they are useful to watch the vital components of the engine. one you should have is the pyrometer to measure the Exhaust temp. if these get too hot, you can cause the engine to melt a piston, or worse, sieze up. manifold pressure (boost) is fun to watch, and can be beneficial to help diagnose problems. if you're planning on an automatic, you should have a transmission temperature gauge. if you do plan on an automatic, some sort of shift kit or valve body modification should be used to harness the power and give a firmer shift feel. for the intake, it depends on preference and if you like noise or not. there is a overly large filter that is a direct fit onto the intakes of our trucks, and we call it the "kwik filter" due to the member (a moderator) Kwikkordead who brought it to our attention. he says he didnt invent it. do some searching, youll get a lot to read. there is many other small mods to do, some are expensive, some are relatively Free so to speak. just look through some recent threads, espeically ones with lot's of replies. if you have any questions, feel free to holler.

DISCLAIMER: visiting www.ford-trucks.com (all rights reserved) will eventually lead you to the desire to modify and modify your truck. this diesease is called PMS, short for Powerstroke Mod Syndrome. there is only a few known cures for this, and they are emptywalletitis and maxedoutcreditcarditis, and wifepissedatmeitis if you have to deal with that. ask anyone here about PMS, most of us here have it.

see ya around.

There is a Powerstroke hot rod shop right there in Houston. Called Diesel Innovations. There's a little white F-250 parked down there that can spank a blown GT....unless you were faster than 11.55 @ 122.4

I will be in Houston over the summer and plan on doing several mods on my truck. If you wind up getting a PSD we might could help each other out.... or just look at the trucks.

I would enjoy meeting PSD gurus in Houston this summer to expand my knowledge abit.

I am in Houston as well, and always looking for PSD buddies.

I say sell whats left of the stang and get you a 7.3 POWERSTROKE.

I would not worry too much about the miles, I would just say try to buy with under 200K miles. (Just for the heck of it anyways)

Although we may not have a solution for the maxed out cc or empty wallet, we have a plethora of lies to tell the wife, or significant other, why these mods are not only necessary, but vital to the life of the truck and the freedom of this country.

Kris, are you saying that those of us with the cannons would think of trying to influence a new guy into coming to our side? Never... He'd be more than welcome to go with that little, quiet 4."
