Wornoldford,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.
I bought a reman 7.3 turbo out of Minnisota and blew three of them up.
I went with a salvage yard 6.9 motor and it is doing better than the remans were.
Plus it cost 1/3 of what the reman did.
I am sure there are other places that do better jobs, but I am very skeptical after my experience.
So did mine, the only thing that was any good was the warranty.
But when your truck is broke dowm more with a new reman engine than it was with a 300,000 mile engine in it something is wrong.
Basspro, the problems I had with my engines were from the reman machining work.
You will have to have all that done by someone else.
If you had the all the equipment to do that part of it, you could trade it for a brand new Power Stroke and have fuel money left over.
Well i guess when i say rebuild my engine, i mean replacing pistons and piston rings, valves, rocker arms, valve springs, gaskets, injectors, IP, stuff like that. Not anything like milling or new heads or anything like that. My engine is in great shape running wise, and its pretty much a new engine. the guy before me bought it for his farm in OK, moved to CO and drove to and from the two during the summers. If I remember correctly he sold his farm in OK in 85 or 86, and only used the truck periodically in CO. I dont remember when he moved down here but when he did he parked the truck under the carport, and left it, running it only when needed. The truck body wise seems to be allright, it was hit in the rear quarter panel at one time because i got hit there to discover a lot of rusty metal and bondo. He said it only had 115K miles, but that is hard to tell because I dont know if it has turned over twice or not. Also the odo seems a little funny to me mile wise. Is there any way of checking to see the actual mileage? Theres no turbo on the engine so i dont think ill have to worry about warped cylinder walls and what not but id like to replace all the moving parts, gaskets etc just because. Im probably going to have this truck through college so i need it to run good and be reliable, and i will hopefully e installing a turbocharger as well. I know i could buy a new truck, but i love my old truck, and i hate newer trucks, plus my 83 is a lot easier to work on then a PSD
oh no it is fine now, im saying in the future, like when i add a turbo, and propane. I want to build this truck up into the best it can be power wise, and mileage wise. Like i said i have no idea what the actual mileage is on my truck or if im actually getting the right power. It sumtimes acts funny, youd have to drive it for about a week to get what i mean.
bassproguy07; The reman came straight from Ford and my mechanic did the work here in SoCal. The previous engine was original and was still running but guzzling oil and supposedly had 300K+ miles on it. I 'stole' the truck from the original owner and kept adding oil before I broke down and ordered the engine; I love the body style of these Fords and need to tow but didn't want a new truck or the payment. I'm just 2 months shy on the end of the 24 month warranty and just had Banks install their Sidewinder kit on it early March. Haven't towed as a turbo yet but can tell from driving around it'll perform like I need.
Yah i want the banks bad, im putting most of my money towards BIO diesel production. Ive made a few test batches, and ran them in my trucks front tank, AWESOME!!! I'm hoping to save some money by making 30 gal. every 3 weeks. Im planning on runnin b 100 but might go 50. With the money i save im hoping to get new parts for the truck, maybe even a turbo down the road. Ill be 18 in july, so im hoping to get one for my birthday, but who knows. Im like you though, i love the body style of the old trucks, and even if i could afford a new truck id still want an old one!!
