There are two different style rear differentials on Ford Expeditions. All of the 2wd Expy rear differentials that I've seen are the same style, & all of the 4wd models that I've seen are different from the 2wd's. By this visual difference, I made the wrong assumption that the 4wd models, by definiton, had LS diff's. I was wrong again, apparently.

yes ford does use 2 different size rear ends up until 2005 one is the 8.8'' found only with the 4.6 engine then there is the 9.75 '' found only with the 5.4 engine. Up front the 4x4 trucks use the 8.8'' with both the 5.4 and 4.6 powered trucks.
