I have a 1978 F100 that currently does not run. I pulled the valve covers off and noticed that the pushrods and roller rockers, as well as the cylinder heads were covered in a thick, oily film. Is there anything I could use to clean them? Would a degreaser be OK to use? I want the truck to be a reliable driver, so is there anything else I should check while I have the engine apart? I plan to do basic maintenance, such as changing spark plugs and oil, once I get the engine put back together. I would like to restore the truck, eventually, but for now I want to have a reliable second vehicle that I can haul stuff around in.
I wouldn't spray anything in there. Drain the oil and include some Marvel Mystery oil or Sea Foam and a new filter. If it runs OK watch the oil change it ofter for a while again using the additives. You can also put some of it down the carb while it's running if you are carefull. Don't use too much at once.
