Ugly front end noises!

I am getting some pretty bad noises coming from the front end of my truck. For those of you who don't know it's an 84 F150 4x4. The first noise, I have a pretty good feeling it's wheel bearings...kind of a growling noise that gets worse as I speed up. The second one is a loud bang when I turn the wheel sharp to either side, or if I hit bumps while braking and turning, I also noticed it when I was 4bying last weekend. I was trying to climb a relatively steep hill with soft sand in 2wd, I lost momentum and had to stop and put it in 4wd. After I locked it in I put it in reverse to back out of my ruts, as soon as I let the clutch out I heard a loud bang and I could feel it in the floorboard. I thought maybe it was a broken tranny mount but everything I checked felt tight. Any feedback is appreciated!

sounds like wheel bearings to me! i'd go ahead and get new inners, outters, and wheel seals while you're in there. they could prolly be replaced anyhow!

I have new bearings and seals sitting on the workbench waiting to be installed. What do you think the bang sound is, bearings too? I am wondering if it might be radius arm bushings. It seems anytime I put heavier torque to the front end, ie 4bying I get a loud bang from underneath. I did a nut/bolt check on all brackets...I'm lost. Thanx for the help, anyone else have any ideas?

My truck handled a little funny in 4wd, and I pulled the axleshaft out, and the u-joint was so bad that it wouldn't hardly bend with me standing on it. It stuck out straight. Maybe the u-joints are bad?

The truck drives fine in 4wd, no binding or indications of bad u-joints. I think it's in the suspension.

Check for cracks in the radius arm bracket on the frame. Remove the bushings to get a better look. A little hairline crack could cause that popping noise.

I would bet money on it that that is your problem.

Geez I hope not! I recently installed a 4 inch suspension lift on this truck, I don't know how I would crack a nodular cast iron radius arm mount! It's more of a bang sound, I will have to crawl underneath it tonight and do some checking. I know it didn't start doing it until I was trying to pull my brothers Blazer out of a sand pit after the girlfriend buried it to the frame . I was wondering if it might be a broken motor mount. It sure is a hell of a bang, I can feel it in the floor boards.

If you recently installed the lift, did you go back after 100 miles or so and re-torque all the bolts? They need time to settle into place, then they must be tightened back up. If not, parts may look tightly bolted into place, but they can wiggle a little in place, and cause banging noises. I had the same issue, just installed a 4" lift, then every time I went into reverse, it would bang, then bang again when I first applied the brakes going forward. Re-torqueing fixed it.

That could very well be it, I haven't gone through and checked every nut and bolt on the lift kit brackets. The symptoms you described are exactly what my truck is doing right now. I also have not put 100 miles on it since I installed the lift kit. I was looking at Trail Master's website, they offer a frame reinforment bracket for 80-96 F-series and Bronco...they recommend it being used with their 4 inch standard lift kits on these trucks. Does anyone know what part of the frame this bracket strengthens? I am suspecting they bolt on the inside of the frame rails where the radius arm brackets bolt to box the frame in. The reason why I want to know is, if they aren't too complicated I want to make up a set of my own for my 84. Thanx again!

Check your coil spring bottom mounting nuts, sounds like it may be loose. As well as everthing else that was involved with the lift like everyone is saying.

You were asking about a frame reinforcement? On my boss's old truck, the engine crossmember cracked at the bolts. There was about 8 cracks spiderwebbing out. On a buddy's truck that we lifted, we put in a piece of steel that adjoins both bolts to help spread the stress, and not have it on each bolt individually. Here's a pic

I can't remember for sure, but I think it is 3/16" thick. On my boss's truck, it would start to shake so bad after hitting a bump that he would have to stop and then start going again. Just some thoughts...

That's a darn good I idea Ted! I am going to do that same thing to my truck. The frame reinforment I was talking about would be either a piece of C-channel or 1/4" plate welded into a C-shape to bolt tightly inside the frame rail, in the area where the radius arm brackets bolt to the chassis. The taller radius arm brackets on the 4/6 inch lift kits tend to put lateral leverage and strain on the frame rails. If I were to box that area in, it seems this would spread the additional stress from hard off road use. What do you think?

If I understand you correctly, it would do something like the piece I showed you, only for the radius arm brackets? Sounds good to me.

I think your close on that one Ted, here is what I was thinking. This is a profile of the frame rail [ ,now I would make up a bracket shaped like this ] to fit inside the frame rail like this [] and bolt it in with the bolts that hold the radius arm brackets and then also bolt it from the top edge of the frame as well. I want to bolt it so I can remove it later on if I ever needed to. Sound like a good idea?

To prevent crushing, shouldn't it be like this[[? While some would disagree, I too, think bolting stuff on is good in case you want to get rid of it later.
