My buddy was telling me that the zx3 and zx5 are the exact same overall size, just the zx5 has smaller doors to make room for all 4, anyone know if this is true?
Also, i was considering maybe, maybe, big maybe, looking at some svt focii as a daily driver .. any opinions on these? I know they aren't exactly powerhouses, but i'm hoping that would help out with insurance costs.. so its still a little sporty, but not over the top.. or do the insurance companies just see SVT and jack up the prices?
Insurance- that's a relative thing. Insuring a young guy is like insuring an axe-murderer, just a matter of degrees. If whatever you buy is new enough to require full-coverage, it's gonna cost you. If you have a ticket or a wreck, it's really gonna cost you.
Finding a SVT could be a challenge- I've only seen one, and one of our techs drives it.
An SVT is a good vehicle though - a great gearshift, and a ride/handling/steering combo that is the best in the business BAR NONE. Good brakes as well.
The power "issue" comes from the fact it doesn't run a knock sensor... something "some" people can fix - it runs a very conservative spark advance...
I don't know about "over there", but here they have abysmal resale - something I think I may capitalise on in the next few years...
I don't think finding one will be a problem, I found 4 already. Two 2 doors and 2 4 doors (or 3 and 5 if you count the hatch..). All around 30k miles and around 14k price. My buddy's zx3 handles awesomely, and i figure the svt has to be that much better.
I think they are either 03's or 04's.. anything major wrong with these model years?
Nope- Focus is a great little commuter. The only thing that threw me was the price you mentioned- $14K buys a very nicely equipped new one (not a SVT- but new is new, after all).

I have the ZX5 with the Zettec Motor, there a pretty good commuter, and like another Post, Insurance cost all comes with your age Fines or Occurances if any. The Zettec Motor in the ZX5 can be Tweeked and a $1200 Chip added to give it the same Horsepower as in the SVT ZX3 model. What ever Tricks your Trigger , your chose but just remember you could be creating a magnet for the Cops. Enjoy
Another question, does teh svt zx3 run on premium?
I'm really considering this with all the recent problems i've been having with my truck and having to commute to college next year, gas money will be killing me.
I just don't want to go from my big v8 truck to a little weiner car that is slow as crap. Thats why i'm considering the svt.
Man I hate this thread title, every time I see it I think it is about some math problem...
lol
you can change it if you'd like.
Polarbear- which model are you talking about? My buddy's is a 01-02 something like that and it has the 130hp engine. Do the new ones have a higher output engine?
I still think i'd rather go with an svt just for all the upgraded components though.
I did a little searching on the web and found that it does require premium for the higher power numbers. Do you know if the computer is advanced enough to run on different octane levels without serious problems?
The SVT comes with 170hp. I have found that they have more than sufficient traction (but then again I have driven them on our course chip bitumen in the dry - not on ice).
While (As aforementioned) the engine doesn't have a knock sensor - which means it isn't "advanced enough to run on different octane levels".
In my experience it has run on regular ok without pinging, but it would be worth running premium (not only for insurance on the engine, but for gas mileage).
Interesting. I wonder why they left the knock sensor off on a performance vehicle like this?
So are you saying it could make more power with a tune that takes full advantage of the higher octane fuel?
I wonder if motorhaven will let me trade my diablo tuner for my f150 in on one for a focus.. lol
Hm. The lowest price i've seen around here is 15-17k for a zx3 5 speed.
But like you said, i'll have to test drive a few and see what i like. Just from not driving any i'm drawn to the svt.
I've seen a 03 SVT focus, with around 30,000 miles for right around 10 grand. If you build a brand new focus 3 door, with a 5 speed on fords website, it only comes to like 13 grand new.
I never drove the SVT focus, but I work with a guy who had a 03 for a while. 170hp, balanced engine, 6 spd. He loved the car, but had a family so he had to sell. He said it was great. I'm looking into one for the wife.
