Why is the truck gonna blow up if you don't? The new flash will be around for quite some time. If you're having driveability issues and still under warranty then you would be a fool not to have had it done already. Big difference in truck after Re-flash!
Can someone explain the computer update to me please. I have an 05' that we bought last month new. We just hit 800 miles. Iv averaging 14-16mpg. Its a Fx4 5.4.
superrangerman2002 - My 2004 does not have the slugish feel a lot of folks seem to have experieced and I am like you, I am afraid the truck will get worse... If it was a 'better for sure' I would do it, but... I am afraid of the results.
The only reason I had mine reflashed was because I felt it was a little sluggish and I had a surging problem just off Idle. The reflash cured all my problems. I average 16.3 MPG on a mixed drive to work which is 32 miles one way. I say sluggish because I traded in a 97 Expy with a 5.4 and Flowmasters. It had a K&N cold air kit and a Hypertech stage III chip. The stock Lariat felt sluggish to me. But then again everything did..... The Expy kicked a$$! I love my truck now and I didn't buy it for fuel economy. If I was looking for fuel economy I would have bought an Escape Hybrid! Trucks are just that..... TRUCKS!
Response and transfer is firmer than before!!!..after hearing about the different complaints in the older models you don't expect the PCM will not be updated in the new models.
Rule of thump,,,more problems in first model and less in the new models!
It is up to you!, you don't have to do it..but I believe it sould be better after one or two years.
Most people with the 04's or early 05's should have had this done already, provided they had problems with their trucks. Some take an "ain't broke, don't fix" approach. If there was a substantial difference or requirement to update, a dealer should have no problem reflashing the PCM at your request, as long as you have a good "excuse". And no, "I want a faster truck" or "my truck is 2 years old" are not good excuses for a dealer.

Dealers will reflash at your request, but you may have to pay.
Dealers will reflash if there are driveability issues. If you are under warranty then it is free. Keep in mind that there will be a road test involved and they will hook up a "flight" recorder at most competent dealerships to log data while driving. If they find nothing wrong they may or may not Re-flash it. I know my local dealership won't do anything for customers for free. They don't make good deals on selling cars and trucks either. I drive 30 miles to go to another dealership that has thier act together. I know the service manager and they are great people to deal with. This is the kind of combination you need to find in a dealership. I can call them on the phone and tell them whats going on and 90% of the time they can have me in and out in under an hour!
