The pills are probably just solidified snake oil.
Wait a minute - snake oil isn't good for anything else - I wonder how well it burns in a diesel?
I am thinking the same thing. However the person who gave them to me says her husband uses them in his F350 7.3 and went from 17-18 mpg to 22mpg. I am sure it is hoop-la , but do ya'll think it is at least safe to try them one time and put an end to all the questions?
Man do they smell like moth *****, WHY?
What would moth ***** do?
Well, typical moth ***** consist of napthalene, which is a hydrocarbon solid that volatilizes easily into a combustable gas. It is usually present in such small quantities that flammability is not an issue. The second type of moth ***** is made from paradichlorbenzene. To work, the "pills" would have to dissolve easily in diesel fuel. I know the second one is soluble in a number of hydrocarbon liquids (maybe diesel, don't know); I don't know about the first.
If it has any effect at all, it might be similar to adding acetone to your diesel fuel. Some people claim better running, better mileage, more power. Until I see good dyno testing with proper experimental controls, I will continue to be very wary of the claims.
Same with the pills. Are you willing to let your $10k engine be a test subject?
I don't believe it and I wouldn't waste my time...JMO...if it was capable of doing it it would already be mass-produced by the big oil companies or some other big market share controller. My guess is that like almost everything else when looking to see if it improves MPG they are subconsciously driving more efficient...I've found myself doing the same at times.
