Assuming originality, you can identify the type and ratio by the axle code on the door tag. Original rear axles types were the Ford-built 9" or the Dana 44. I have a handy reference on my site to visually identify which type:

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 12-Dec-02 AT 02:44 PM (EST)]Here is an excellent site that shows what the 9 inch case and it's variations look like, great amount if info, lots of pictures. This is how I was able to tell that I had the 9 3/8 inch rear in my 68 Ranger. He also shows how to decode your housing tag, assuming you still have one.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 12-Dec-02 AT 10:00 PM (EST)]Thanks for the info Stockman. It appears that I have the Dana model. Is is difficult to change these gears(ie lots of pieces) or similar to the Ford 9" with the removable third member? Do you know of any references for changing out Dana gears that might make it easier? Also are there certain vehicles to get gears from or will any Dana do? Thanks again.
The third member is not removeable on the Dana. You pull the carrier out from the back after removing the cover plate and pulling the axles. If you are looking to just change the ratio then it isn't too bad at all to work on. The gear sets are readily available out there. As far as references, the site posted above on the 9" was chock full of good info. I think there are similar sites out there with Dana reference materials. Nothing comes to mind right off, but I bet one of the other members will chime in. Let us know how you progress on your project.
