Hey guys,
My 92 Aero XL 4WD 4.0l that I just bought has a few issues that has me a bit concerned. What's your opinion on it?
1. When driving and coming to a stop everythings great. Taking off from a stop if feels as if she's downshifting at that point. Is this normal? I thought it should downshift while coming to a stop, not taking off?
2. Going up hills I hear valve ping. More pronounced when the TC locks up. No error codes what so ever, not even in memory. Sound like the timing is off?
There is also a loud humm from the fuel pump area..... Maybe the filter is clogged starving the engine of fuel? (Lean condition?)
I havent had the chance to give her a tune up yet.
Well, firstly, replace the fuel filter. Secondly, check for signs that the transmission modulator may be leaking. If the hum persists, try running a can of Techron concentrate or Seafoam through your gas.
I think I'll take her in to get the tranny serviced. I can work on just about anything, except transmissions..... They scare me....LOL
Just lately I noticed when the TC locks up, she jerks just a little bit. I wanna make sure this thing is gonna be okay, cause I'm turning it over to my wife and 8 month old son.
This Monday, when I took it in to get the windshield replaced, I noticed the 4wd light on. I wasn't going fast, maybe 35 for a mile or so. Didn't "feel" like the 4wd was engaged 50%. No jerking while turning sharp on dry road.
Is this a normal problem? Or should I look deeper?

If it's just the modulator, it's external, about as easy as changing the fuel filter, so don't waste your money with the shop.

That's perfectly normal. Both my vans do it. As long as it's not a whiplash jerk, it's normal.

The 4WD light should be flashing in a certain pattern. Count the flashes and post the code here. If I have to guess, I'd say one of the Transfer Case speed sensors is busted. Meanwhile, if it bothers you or if it acts up, just disconnect the 4WD module under the driver's seat. The van would still give you 30/70 front/rear power split, but you won't get any help when one axle slips on ice or snow.
What I mean by jerking, is when the TC is locked up, it continuously jerks a bit. Almost like a miss. But it doesn't do it in 1st through 3rd gear. So I suspect it's the TC, or filter??
The 4wd light didn't flash, it was on steady. I can disconnect it completely? Just by unplugging the box? We live in an area that rarely get's snow. I could plug it back in when the ice comes out I guess.
I really should keep an eye out and see if it comes on again. I've put about 250 miles on it already. Even towed my new Baja behind it up hills to test it out. Not one issue.... Couldn't even tell it was towing anything! Tranny felt good and strong.
So before I go totally bonkers thinking "what about this, and this....etc" I'm gonna replace the fluid and filter.
Tune it up! I've had a bad plug in the past that felt like TC not locking up properly. Even a mechanic said it was the TC. Replaced plugs and wires and the problem was gone. Use Motorcraft or Autolite plugs and wires. A good tune-up solves lots of problms in Aerostars.
AWD problems can be caused by mismatched tires or unequal tire pressure.

first run codes KOEO KOER and cylinder balance test, report results back here before you throw a bunch of cash away chasing problems by parts throwing....throw your cash in the casinos, more entertaining and less work
use only Motorcraft or Autolite double platinum plugs and plug wire in EDIS 4L...these two have the correct heat range plug for the app....put in another brand and you will be giving a blood sacrifice to the Aero Vampire Gods
i run 40 psi in front and 32 psi in back of AWD for ride comfort and handling....no AWD problems here
torque converter lockup clutch will function poorly with heat damaged OLD ATF...if older than 30k miles change now or if towing Ford says 22k miles....old ATF kills trannys and makes auto tranny shop owners RICH
4L is infamous for combustion chamber carbon buildup....search Aero forum for cleaning regime....first can of Seafoam in thru TB to clean intake valve tulips and ring packs....then quart of water in thru TB to micro burst steam clean the combustion chambers
If the fuel pump is loud enough to hear through the interior panels, I would check the fuel pressure. Mine made loud noises before it left me stranded 30 mile from home on a dark night. Just before it died, the engine was knocking more than usual. Normal fuel pressure should be around 35-40 psi.

No error codes what so ever.
The 4wd problem was because of tire pressure. Had new tires put on, problem went away.
Also put in a brand new battery, and left it unhooked for 20 mins. (Time to drink the proverbial mechanics juice) And took it for a spin to remap the computer.
Strange, but it seems to shift normally now. Does the computer re-map the shift points for your driving style?
Still have the TC issue, but not as bad. I will change the fluid and tune her up. I also want to seafoam it.
I'll let ya know my results.
anytime the AWD dash light is on STEADY, you are in full transfer case lockup with 50% power distribution....different size old tires must have caused the axle speed difference to trigger the AWD computer into lockup...there is variation brand to brand and tire model to tire model in same size
the older OBDI systems control only the 3-4 OD and TC lockup shift points with limited adaptative adjustment for driving style
cylinder balance test will tell much about engine performance cylinder to cylinder, failing plugs, ig. wires, burnt or sticking valves, broken leaking rings, dead cylinder from coolant leak, ad naseum>>>>>>
engine cylinder misfire at speed, hvy varying load and rpm was a nightmare to troubleshoot before OBDI and OBDII came along...
now a modern OBDII system will pinpoint and record a high speed under load only random intermittent single cylinder misfire and memory capture operating parameters at time of event
