I have a question about my 460, I have been told that I can swap my timing gear set for a set from a 429 and improve my gas mileage, has anyone had this result or performed this procedure with any good results?
Basically the 70's 460's were set up for lower emissions but part of that was a retarded timing set that also cost a little bit of power. By switching to a "non-retarded" timing set you can gain some of that power back.
Hello- Welcome to FTE! I have moved your post to the specialized forum we have here for your question. Check out the list of tech forums we have on FTE. There is a wealth of information and expertise here to help you. There are a number of links in my sig below to help you also. Have fun!
First if you buy a timing chain for a 429 you will get a 460 chain. The only way to get a 429 chain is to buy like a Cloyes 3 keyway set {True Street Roller}. 460s 72 and later are retarded from the factory to meet smog. buying a 69-71 460 set you will beable to set up your timing to TDC. with a chain like Cloyes you can set 4 degrees retard, TDC, 4 degrees adv. Setting 4 degrees retared will give you more torque, many don't know that many of the [Hi Pro 429 came that way from the factory]. 4 degrees adv. will give you more speed. TDC will give improvement over the factory 8 degrees retarded, 72-97. 69-71 were TDC.
As for gas mileage 460s do what they do, I haven't noticed any great mileage change. I get 9-11 MPG. I'm running a Cloyes True Street Roller 4 degrees retarted from TDC, Holley 4160 600 CFM, on an Edelbrock Performer manifold. in an 86 F250 4x4 460, C6, 3:55 gears.
Hope this helps.
Degreeing the cam is based off of crank degrees. If the cam has a 110 degree intake centerline with the cam installed straight up and you advance it 4 degrees you will then have a 106 degree centerline. That means the valve will open & close 4 degrees sooner. Thus creating more touqre sooner. I would buy a double roller timing chain, it dosen't stretch as easily and when the chain stretches your cam timing retards.
