Stock air cleaner heat riser ???

I just put a stock air cleaner on my wife's truck 1968 F250 with a rebuild 390. I picked the air cleaner up at a wrecking yard. It seems like it takes a long time for the heat riser to open. We went for the maiden voyage tonight on the new rebuild, Transmission and Engine. Both worked well a little stumble on acceleration say from about 45 or 50 mph but other then that I'm happy. Now the heat riser, it was 38 degrees outside for starters. We went down town approx. 2 miles for gas, I checked for leaks, heat riser not open. We went to the Ice Cream shop maybe four miles on a 50 MPH hwy still not open. We came back to town stopped by the store for a bit and then up the hill home, at that point it was just open about half way. Does that seem right?<O</O

The only way to test them is to put a thermocouple inside the air cleaner and see what temp the air is inside during operation. Of course you need to have the temp specs on the sensor. Sometimes the OEM manuals have test specs.

Is the sheet metal shroud that surrounds the maniflod intact? If it isn't, or if it's rusted away, you aren't going to get the airflow over the manifold to heat the air. As far as my truck goes, I have a '67, and it takes a good long time to open.
