My 98 ranger w\3.0 after sitting a long period of time (overnight hours) will start with the belt squeeling and then the noise stops and runs fine. Now that the temp is getting warmer i notice its present but not as bad. If i drive my truck for 5-15 mins and stop somewhere, when i start it up i hear no noise (except in the real lower temps). When i inspected the belt its alright, but the tensioner has some rust on it-Could this be the problem
Its more than likely the belt tensioner or idler pulley. Although, I know with my Crown Vic (same EXACT problem as you're describing, word for word), what I thought was the tensioner squeeling, turned out to be the starter going bad. Might look into getting a Goodyear Gatorback Belt in the future though. They seem to eliminate most squeels that are due to the belt. Goodluck.

Kinda sounds like a dry bearing, could be the tensoner or idler pulley bearings.
Can you isolate the problem area a little closer???? Maybe carefully using a piece of garden hose or a broom handle on, or close to where you think the noise is comming from & see if you can narrow it down some.
Or, try removing the belt & checking both those puleys for play/wobble/roughness/overly tight, if you find any, repace them.
My Taurus " cricket chirp", that I thought was a belt problem, turned out to be the idler pulley, with just the smallest amount of play/wobble in it, I had to pay close attention to it, as it wasn't rough at all, just a hint of "wobble/looseness!!!!
Also check your waterpump pulley & bearing along with the remainder of your pulleys for problems, like to much tightness, or play, or coolant or P/S or engine oil on them or the belt.
When i get some time away from work im gonna check out the pullys and was gonna change the belt anyway so it will probaly be a while before i let you know thanx
This infamous squeling noise is an easy fix. It is niether the pulley or the belt. It is the front bearing on the starter motor. Simply pull down the starter and grease (or whatever lube you prefer) the front exposed bearing at the end of the shaft . I've had 2 Rangers that made the noise. Its an easy fix, and a lot less annoying. I don't know if its a permanent fix or not, but ou'll get a couple of years out of it atleast
The best place to start is with a new Motorcraft belt, then the tesioner followed by the idler. No guarantee it will fix it but it's the place to start, my 2000 still has a minor squeal at start-up some days.
