I had an '03 and now have an '05 6.0. I would hand calculate mileage every 3rd tank or so and compare it to what the overhead said. They were always fairly close, maybe .2-.4 mpg difference. Not bad as far as accuracy goes, in my opinion.
Sounds like most have seen the same thing (MobeyDick seems to be the exception on this particular thread), but I wouldn't want to rely on the overhead gauge to determine whether or not to buy....
Lots of posts on here regarding mileage. It seems to vary quite a bit. As for me, I get around 16 or so during 'normal' driving, just recently got a little over 18 on a 550 mile trip, mainly hiway.
mine always read between .3-.5 mpg above actual. It was very consistent when reset each tank. Do this before you start the motor after filling to the brim.
