gas question

I personally don't use it. I have a '68 as well and it much prefers the higher octane of premium gas. For about $3.00 more per fillup, I think it's worth it.
I seem to recall reading somewhere that gasohol isn't good to use with catalytic converters, but I could be wrong about that.

gas question

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 15-Dec-02 AT 04:27 PM (EST)]Gasahol was a problem for earlier vehicles because the alcohol used in it (ethanol - EtOH) would attack the rubber and sealants used on the automotive industry back then. The accelerator pump and the rubber/cork gaskets in the carb, the gaskets and their sealants between the manifold and the carb, etc all could be dissolved or weakened by the EtOH.

They started using EtOH compatible gaskets and sealers in the early '80s, so unless you have an original engine that has never had a carb rebuild, you are probably OK. Everything made today is gasahol safe. An exception would be things made to NOS specs for collectors or something like that.

I would replace the rubber fuel lines just to make sure they don't dissolve little pieces which plug up your fuel filter, but those should be changed every so often anyway.

You might end up having to rebuild your carb, but if so, it probably needs it anyway.

And no, Gasahol has no impact on a catalytic converter. Only chemicals which have a metal - such as lead - as part of the composition will hurt the converter.

Methanol (MEtOH) is safely used as a gasoline dryer to remove water out of gas tanks and lines. So not all alcohol is bad for your truck.

You maybe, but not your truck!

gas question

I was under the impression that the lower grade unleaded (87) had more lead, and was therfore better for the older trucks.. yes? no?

I throw in a quart of automatic tranny fluid about every 3rd tankful, my .352 seems to like it a lot.
