I have a 1970 302 that I am having some problems with. When I first start it I have to take the vacuum advance hose off to get it to idle. When I put the vacuum advance off back on it kills it. But I can let it run for awhile and put the hose back on and it doesn't affect it.
Anyone have any ideas what is going on here?

Make sure the vac hose is connected to PORTED vac not manifold vac. There should be no vac at idle and it should increase as engine speed increases. Connect a vac gauge to the hose to check it. Also set the base timing to about 10-12 deg BTDC with the hose disconnected. Start it up and watch the timing as you rev it up. It should advance a little because of centrifugal advance. Then connect the hose to ported vac and rev it up. It should advance more than before.
