i didn't take the case apart, i just did headgaskets, and starter and rebuilt the actual mower. the rest of the engine was fine. i repainted the engine.
when i crank it white smoke comes out the exhaust.
it has a very weak spark. it makes me wonder because the coil is only about a year old. and it is gapped correctly. what else besides the magnet on the outside of the crank makes the fire?
i found the problem. its my dads lawn tractor, it is an electric starter.
my dad picked me up a box of flywheel keys, so i was kicking around with it, and noticed the back of the box said, 8-16hp 1cyl, this is a 20hp twin. so i pulled the flywheel, sure enough it had sheared. so i put another in, and it started and ran for a min. i was happy, but the mower store isn't open till tomorrow to get the right key, o well i'll have to wait.
can't blame it on anyone but me, should of seen the label on the keys dad brought me.
Just don't fabricate a key out of hardened steel, they're made to shear for a reason...
I did that once and sure as the sky is blue hit a rock with the blade ten minutes after i fired it up. The flywheel took off like a frisbee and the shaft was ruined.
i hear you wolf, and a screwdriver doesn't work either, but it does break a flywheel. learned that when i was 11. ha
something good did come out of it though, my toy mower, i had some spare pullies........it already has a built motor and a stack. used to have a hydro, now has a 6spd. but today i took a pulley, machined it a little put the big end up, instant 30mph, i have a small pulley for the rear, but with the lack of real brakes, i'll wait till i adapt gokart discs to it.
