This is my first post , I thinking about buying a older diesel 3500, The truck is in awesome shape for the year. It has a 7.3 in it with 115000 miles. When I went to look at the truck yesterday, the owner could not get it started due to the fax it sat for a while. I'm thinking its probably injector seals. Once we hit it with alittle ether it started right up. One question I do have is when I drove the truck it shifted alittle hard between gears when I got on it. If I drove it normal and feathered the gas it shifted ok. I have a 95 f150 that shifts funky also , is this normal or should I be concerned.
If the glow plugs were on or hot when the either was used they are burnt up. Glow plugs and either don't mix. Air leaks in the fuel system can cause problems after sitting if air builds up in the fuel system.
As for the shifting my '90 shifts hard "solid" but it has a BANKS shift mod. And I turned the "TPS" on the injector pump up "clock wise" a little and that changes the shifting.
The more information you can share, the easier it will be for these guys to help with a problem. What year is "older"? The glow plug system varies somewhat dependng on the vehicles age.
Concept25,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.
You have come to the best place for Ford IDI diesel information on the web.
Did you notice the "Wait to Start" light on the dash?
How long did it stay ON?
Since you said it had a 7.3 I can assume it has a late style controller that was used on the 88 thru 94 engine.
Concept25,
First test is to take an automotive test light and clip the ground clip on the positive battery terminal.
Remove the connector from each glow plug and touch the tip of the test light to the terminal on the glow plug.
If the light lights, the glow plug is good.
If it does not light, the glow plug is bad.
Replace them only with Motorcraft/Beru ZD 9 glow plugs, available at AutoZone for 9.99 each.
The above test is performed with the key in the OFF position.
If you look above in the blue bar to the left you will see "User CP"
In the drop box select "Edit Signature"
Enter the truck info in the signature box.
Then we can see the info without you having to type it in each post.
Hold your mouse pointer over the word "Signature" to the right of the grey bar on my post to see what I mean.
