Truck wouldnt start after dinner at taco bell. I got under the truck and come to find out the electrical connection to the starter had melted off, well i think it is the starter its next to the oil pan on the passenger side. At first i thought it was the oil pump and im still unsure but oil pump is mechanical right? Trucks sitting in the mall parking lot right now untill i can get either a new starter wire or starter or oil pump or whatever it is thats broken thats why i need yalls help. If its the oil pump im screwed cuz the engine prolly seized but there was no noticeable change in the temperature of the engine if my guage even works. I need to know if it is the starter or the oil pump that i am describingand if getting a new connector will fix the problem. I tried N riggin it and sparks flew everywhere so i dont know if its the starter thats burnt out or what. Would gettin a new wire fix it or no? I need help ASAP because i can only keep it parked a the mall for a day, Thanks all!
The oil pump is hidden inside the oil pan; you cannot see it from the outside.
You said the truck wouldn't start. Did it crank over? If it did crank, I'm wondering if you spent too much time cranking it over without pausing to let the starter cool, thus overheating the starter cable.
The bigger question then is: why didn't it start? Loss of glow plugs, no fuel to injector pump, etc.
ok it wouldnt even crank it just clicked. I had no problem starting at all, my glow plugs arent even a month old. Im thinking it could have been when they were bad all the hard starting but it could also be that th truck is a 1983, its been to colorado and has seen some snow and salt so exposed metal electrical connections could ver well just be corroded and weak. I was freaking out when it happened, and wasnt thinking straight that is why i thought it was the oil pump. once i got home and warmed myself up i got to thinking really hard at what was goin wrong thats when i figured it was thee starter. What i am wondering is it the starter that czused it to melt or just a bad cable, cable would be the easiest fix and the starter is pretty much easy as well.
well, a new cable is a heck of allot cheaper than a new starter, so i would try two things.
1: if you are on good terms with your auto parts house get a starter and cable, and try the cable first. if it starts rite up, return the starter.
2: if the parts house will not go for idea #1, get a cable and with crossed fingers, give it a try. the worst that can happen is that you will have to go back for a starter.
another thing. disconnect the battery before you start down there, and make sure the cable is not touching anything other than the starter post before you hook the battery back up.
I agree with TJC. Get a new cable. You will need one anyway. Disconnect the batteries and fit new cable. If luck is with you that will solve your problem. If not disconnect batteries again and fit new starter.
My guess would be that the cable melted because it got loose. I have seen it happen, and when it gets loose, it starts arcing, melting it, if let go long enough, to the point of burning off.
yes that was the problem, the nut was loosened, im going to go buy that cable but how long does it take to install. The truck is sitting in the mall parking lot would it be better to tow it home? or could i just work on it there. Where does the cable go from the starter??
battrey cable runs from starter to 1st battery then across radiator support to the other battery.I have seen them murrays auto parts for about $40.By the way if you do have to replace the starter and you have the big delco, spend a couple of more bucks and get the mitubishi starter as it is smaller and with gear reduction it will crank the engine over faster and is a direct replacement for the big delco.

Heres one for ya...I was on holidays and my amp gauge was indicating a continues charge when ever I was driving, truck wouldnt start, batteries shot, so I thought. Turns out to be the starter, I replace it, on we go...my daughter friend fell ill, arrange to drive approx 300 miles back to meet up with sick girls parents then drive 300 miles back to our campsite,[that was the plan], well all good deeds dont go unpunished! I try to start the truck to head back, no go, brand new starter shot, I only got about 10 starts out of it. Long story short replaced the battery, voltage regulator, alternator and solinoid, expensive camping trip but runs great now!
I just need to change that cable. But theres no room to work uner there it pisses me off. I got it to start, hit it with a hammer after tightening old cable on there.
bass--that the case--the solenoid on the starter aint much good--clean the bat cable--and replace the starter--should be fine then--and as said--dont put another delco back on--if thats what have now--put on the mitsu--
