I am planning on upgrading the exhaust, tranny, filter and chip/tuner on my 01 X I recently purchased. I have read many of the posts regarding these mods and some of you have replied to my questions. Well, I have more questions.
Per your reccomendations I am going to get a set of gauges but am curious as to what the stock egt's are, has anyone ever ran gauges prior to adding exhaust?
What are the normal operating egt's, what are the readings pulling trailer under load. Then part 2 of ?, what are normal safe temps after chip / exhaust upgrades?
Part 3 of ?, what part of the engine are you damaging by running high egt's? If your egt's get too high will you see the engine temp gauge spike?
can't answer part one, because i dont run on stock long enough to take down notes on the temps. i do find it hard to get past 900* preturbo on stock setting.
answer to question 2- the maximum safe EGT for pre-turbo is 1250*, and post turbo is 950*.
answer to question 3- running high EGT's, you will basically begin to melt the pistons. they are an aluminum alloy, and the melting point of aluminum in raw form is about 1218*, the actual metal doesn't maintain that temperature, due to the fresh intake charge cooling, the oil jet spraying the bottom of the piston, and other forms of cooling such as water jackets around the cylinder, and heat transfer through the rings to the liner. even at combustion temperatures of 4000*+, the piston stays cooler and the EGT's dont get that hot. you will begin to shorten the life of the engine at about 1350* pre-turbo. DO NOT sustain this temperature.
EDIT- hmm forgot to read your original post about stock exhaust. forgot to mention i have a straight piped 4" exhaust. you will get alot higher temps with the stock restrictive exhaust.
Anywhere between 900-1200 on a stock truck. Rarely over 1000 running empty. After the chip you might get some really high EGT's. The reason for the gauge is so you can keep it at a manageable level....1250 is generally considered to be the highest safe sustainable temp. You will never see a spike in the oil temp from the EGT's.....above 1250 degrees is where the aluminum pistons can start to melt.
i could get 1100+ empty and 1200 towing my trailer when i was stock now after mods with chip in stock setting i can only get to about 1000 empty and 1100 max when towing stock setting.
check to make sure the thermocouple is in the downpipe, and not an up pipe. it's damn near impossible to run that high post-turbo EGTs on a stock setting. even if you had a watermelon stuffed in the tailpipe.the max stock EGT post turbo should be around 900*. they dont fuel the engines enough to overheat them easily on a bone stock engine.
