strokin it7.3...I put recomended motorcraft oil back in it ($2.46 a quart). I was able to put 9qts back in it. The oil really wasn't that bad and it only had 20k on it. I was more interested in seeing what, if anything was in the bottom of the pan. Have had some issues with the transmisson since my accident back in Dec. and while on a snowmobile trip to the mountains where I had to pull some long steep hills with a 4 place enclosed trailer. Thanks for the advice.
I believe the Torque Drive is rated for Mercon ONLY.Not Mercon V.
Be very careful on the ratings on Amsoil products! If you read the ratings on their motor oil, they lead you to believe that all of their oil is API certified, which it isn't, only a few are!!!
I recently did my trans service and used a new Penzoil product. Penzoil Mercon V multivehicle semi syn. ATF. I thought all Ford torque converters had drain plugs in them. Mine did, I was suprised at how small the plug was, 1/8" NPT I believe it was, not like the the older ones. Suprise to me that some of you didn't have drain plugs. I wish I had done a little more research before doing the service, I would have done the Sonnax at that time! Oh well whats a few qts. of fluid anyway? Also serviced transfer case with same. Changed front and rear diff with Quaker State Full Syn 75W-90 and added a bottle of the old "good" Ford friction modifier. The real stinky stuff. Works like a champ though. Any thoughts on the 75W-90 as opposed to 75W-140?

I thought you were NOT supposed to use Mercon V!? I know it calls for the 75W-140 in the rear diff, and there was a TSB from Ford for the front diff to be changed to the 74W-140 as well. I have a post going on this topic a few weeks ago here:https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=472381
I'm sorry, I mis-stated Pennzoil Multivehcle as being Mercon V. It meets/exceeds the requirements of Mercon and MerconV and in the data sheets it is acceptable for all except the 2004 5spd. http://www.pennzoil.com/products/trans_fluids/mv_atf.html

You don't want to use anything that is formulated to be Mercon V compatible even if it says it's Mercon compatible also. I use Mobil 1, but at the end of last year they reformulated it to be Mercon V compatible. I called Mobil and they said do not use it. I did happen to find enough of the old stock to do one more change.
Lushman, Casey, hink, Thank you for the advice, looks like I've got my work cut out for me this weekend with another filter change etc. Perfect time to install the sonnax.

It's interesting that Mobil agrees with Ford on Mercon - Mercon V compatible ATFs, but Amsoil says it's ok to use it!!!!! Back to the same old thing, watch out for Amsoil!!!!!

It's always easier the second time! Good luck with the Sonnax.
