I'm trying to decide on glasspacks or flowmaster for my 72 f100 w/ a 400 and auto trans....the motor is stock except for the headers I'm about to put on...and later on, performer intake and carb...I dont want it waaay loud, but I want it to sound good....anybody put flows on their truck? please let me know how you like them....I want to make the right decision b/c I called the muffler shop and they want 275.00 to run duals w/ flowmaster and 140.00 for glasspacks....thanks, Charles
This is a revolving question, depends on your personal prefrence.
I've heard both mufflers, and IMO I've heard very few Fords with the FM that actually sound right. again JMO.
The glasspack is the tried and true muffler and I've heard many rigs with glasspacks that sound good. I personally like the deceleration cackle of GPs again, this is also a touchy subject because many don't like this sound.
I love the way gp's sounds, but they are actually illegal in Alabama, but you can buy them, go figure, I have been stopped many times with them on my mustang....
Thanks Eric for the links to the sound clips...after hearing a couple trucks w/ fm's, I dont really like them. I called up to Advance auto where I used to work, I can get 2 Thrush gp's for 50. I think gp's is what the truck will get....
ust my $.02 ford trucks with glasspacks sound better than fm. My 72 f100 had glasspacks since 1978 grew up with it that way. I will never forget that sound. My 76 cougar has them now. Next f100 will have them too.
Flowmasters will give you better performance than the glasspacks
Fluted core gp's will actually cause more tubulance than that of the regular perferated style. but yes the FM will yield more power compaired to the gp.
There's always Magnaflow as well, they are stainless steel packed, and are becoming quite popular in the rotary community because of their quality sound and they will last quite a while.
which ones gave you better gas mileage the glass packs or the flow masters?
You do realize, we're talking trucks..... either one will still leave you, depending on engine, with maybe 16-18 at best.

What about Turbos?? Headers are gonna make it louder. 18" long 3" tips on the end of the pipes help with mellow tone as well. Small pipes make a lot of higher pitched rap.
yes the size of the pipes really do matter. also the size of the motor. My 76 cougar has a 400 in it and has a much deeper sound than my 72 F100 with a 302. The F100 also had 2 inch pipes where the cougar has 2.25
Magnaflow's or Dynomax, I think sound a lot better than Flowmaster's.
thats what I'm thinking about putting on my truck dynomax thrush glasspacks or thrush turbos. I had a set of thrush turbos on my mustang w/ a 5.0 and sounded good.....
