Thanks.....
been a long long time, what are u suggesting drop the pan and replace filter or something, but idk its only when u first start it up and its cold if it was a partially clogged filter wouldent it have probs shifting threw other gears like when its cold i can put it in reverse goes right in no prob put it in drive it doesent go rev it a few times goes in shifts great from there on run it for few miles to warm up put in park then drive goes right in no prob let it sit and cool for a hour or so takes a while to go into gear. Its wierd.
There could be a check ball that's sticking allowing fluid to leak out of the valve body. Doing a regular service is only going to make it better. Fresh fluid, new filter and read your manual for the adjustments required. It's messy but minor maintenence work that needs doing anyway and I'm betting it will take care of the problem.
so im not gonna kill my tranny doing this are we taking a flush or just drain it and put new fluid in this truck has over 330k so i dont want to screw it up but if its safe ill do it.
It's pretty common knowledge that doing a fluid change on a tranny that hasn't been serviced in a LONG time can lead to a failure. With old fluid in there without any detergents, varnish builds up on the parts. You put in new fluid and the detergents break off the varnish, which clogs tiny passages.
Should have done regular service....pay me now or pay me later.
srercrcr, that is possible. But this trans is in failure mode already. Other than an overhaul, a fluid/filter change seems to be his only option to try to keep it going.
i had this same exact problem, i just went and got my tranny maintnanced, since my truck was a 94 and had 128k on it and it had never been done, thought it was a good place to start...now no problems, goes right into drive
It does sound like your trans is on its way to the grave. I would be carefull when revving the engine. When you do this it slips the clutches and that shortenes there life. The transmission probable has a ball that is stuck. I had a truck and I rebuilt the transmission and the valve body turned out to be bad. I replaced the valve body and that helped but i had already fried it before I found the major flaw. I didn't put all the snap rings back. I forgot to put the governer retainer ring in. It sliped when it was warmed up so I just gave up and am selling the truck.
