Here's how ya fix it.
1. Remove the sending unit.
2. Take the float off the bottom of the sending unit and set it aside.
3. CAREFULLY pry the little tabs that hold the one side of the sending unit together up.
4. Remove the wipe.
5. If the wipe has fallen off, then all you might have to do is put it back on. IF NOT, go to the next step.
6. CAREFULLY solder the wipe back together. Once you get it apart, you will see what I am talking about.
-----Most of the wipes are split into 2 pieces from years of rubbing against the coil inside the sending unit. A little solder and you can easily put it back together.
7. Reassemble the sending unit. When you reattach the float, you should move it up and down. If you feel an ever so slight drag of the wipe riding up and down the coil inside, then you're good to go. If not, try a little more soldering.
I did do this to my truck and still working GREAT. Saved me about $100, too. THe wife LOVES things like that around Christmas:-X12
Hope it helps,
Ken

hey I went through the question of replacing a sender as well, and i have received the JC whitney universal replacement sender (for ford and chrysler) also like some of those who posted above.
if any of you remember, how far down the float rod did you make the 90 degree bend in it? ("Dimension B" from the instructions lol, only people who have done this operation will know what the heck i'm talking about). here;s hoping. thanks in advance
working on the gas tank gives me the ******* a little bit so i have been putting it off.
*** regarding this product in case anyone is considering ordering it-- it does work as advertised, but the bolt hole pattern on the flange part of the sender does not match the tapped holes in the top of the fuel tank: on the OEM sender, the holes are arranged in an evenly spread out pattern, in a true circle with one bolt hole every 72 degrees. However, the holes on the jc whitney replacement are NOT evenly spaced.
the two patterns are so close that all the bolts with start into their holes...
what needs to be done is to carefully remove the ORIGINAL gasket from between the old sender and the tank (or alternatively, to buy a new one, if your gasket can't be removed in one piece. Mine came off fine...) Lay the gasket over the flange of the new sending unit to see where material will need to be removed. it's a matter of 'egging'/wallowing out the existing holes in the new sender enough that the screws can go through in the right location.
i am using the tip of an ogive shaped aluminum carbide dremel bit to egg out the holes. I did this inside the house of course, far remote from the gas tank and its fumes because dremelling out the holes with this kind of bit does make some big sparks, lol.
i had to find some slightly oversized rubber washers for a couple of the egged out holes in the flange, but now the dang thing fits properly, i know how much gas i have, there are zero gas fumes in the cab & i am riding on a brand new sender not a junk yard one, for about 25 bucks.
all in all if i could have found a new old stock sender, fine, it would have been a simpler install & it would be the 'correct' way to go. But my truck is made out of at least 3 different year parts that I am aware of lol, and is kind of a beater really.
i am not trying to hijack the thread or anything, it just seems like people are going to search through these threads for this kind of info at some point & maybe it would help
sorry/hoping it helps someone! frnkn-frd
