Ok I got the new solinoid in. It has stopped the ratcheting sound and now the starter is making a sort of grinding noise. And the engine isn't turning over. I have push started it a couple of times and it's been really easy, so I am thinking it's the starter now but I am going to try and test the battery. Any other suggestions?

I would love to but I am a college student with out a charger, and i can't find any one who has one. I think my best bet is to take it somewhere to have it tested.

But what I am worried about is they will just tell me it's low, which I know since I have been trying to start the truck for awhile and then I have no way to charge it.

But at this point I don't see a better option. Their isn't away to test a battery with out a charger type device is their? I have a volt meter but that won't tell me anything with out the battery under load.

buy a battery charger if you can't do that than take it to a car repair shop that can charge it for you.

Ok so I thought that if the battery was the problem it should jump start? Right? So I used my friends truck and it started right up. I then shut it off. Then it started up once. The second time no. I got it going again and tried driving it, and it started missing and making horrible sounds and died. So I started thinking about what I had done lately, fixed some vacume tubes on the climate controll, and had the dash out to try and fix the speedo.

So I put the dash back in. The headlights and what not brightened up. Got it started again, ran it for awhile and then it ran like normal.

So the lack of dash was the voltage problem??? I guess.

I hope it starts tomorrow.

Thanks for all the help.

Update

So as weird as it seemed. The instrument cluster being out was the problem. Not only did it fix my problem but I learned tonight that the altenator is wired thru the gague in the instrument cluster and a resistor. Well with the cluster out the battery wasn't charging and thus my electrical problems.

Thanks for all your help.

LOL, so you're telling us that the whole time we were trying to troubleshoot this the instrument cluster was still out?

Could have save you a few dollars if we knew it. Alot of the wiring in the cluster is attached to engine equipment, by removing it you are creating an incomplete circuit.
