Yesterday I posted a thread regarding after I got my exhaust installed, my pickup stalled about a half mile from the muffler shop. I called the muffler place and they came and diagnosed the problem as a bad cam position sensor. The muffler place works on diesels, so be it a good or bad decision I took it back to the muffler place. Yesterday they did some more tests and confirmed it was a bad CPS. They quoted me $475 to fix it which includes a diagnostic fee. I thought this was outrageous. I called the Ford dealership, which are typically the most expensive and they quoted $275 for just replacing the CPS and $80 if I wanted them to do any diagnostic work to verify the problem. I called the muffler place back and told them what Ford charges and they quickly stated they would match the price. I am a trusting person, but at this point I was beginning to question their integrity. The invoice has the part number, which I looked up and is a CPS with a unit price of $241. Getting to my question, I want to verify, if possible, they replaced the CPS, but I am not sure what it is located. Could somebody please tell me where to find the CPS on my vehicle?

Thanks, Chad

Another quick question. My 2000 PSD on has 61K. Is it common for the CPS to go faulty with low mileage?

Thanks, Chad

WOW. Do it yourself and save some cash!!!

The CPS install is a piece of cake as long as you've got a 10MM socket and 3" extension. The bolt will be tight, but you can do it in a few minutes.

Some CPS fail in as little as 25K miles. It all depends on which little 12 year old Indonesian kid put it together.

If you search, there are TONS of threads regarding CPS replacement.

Ouch, they were trying to get one over on you. I bought a cam sensor for my truck a couple of months ago from the local International dealer for a little less than $100. The list price at the dealership where I work is $181 for the CPS, and I charge .5 hr to do the install (currently about $38).

Yeah, they are trying to rape you.
Go to your local International truck center and ask for a CMP sensor for a 2000 T444E engine. They will give you a black object in a little plastic bag with a Ford emblem on it. For a lot less than you will pay for the exact same part at the Ford dealership. I paid $98.00 last year for mine at Husky truck center in Tukwila, WA.

I don't work in the automotive industry so maybe it's not that uncommon of a practice but it seems to me that there is little chance of not being bent over when taking your vehicle in for service. Is it just buyer beware or are there things that consumers can do to even the odds a bit? $475 for a CPS seems like fraud to me, not just a high markup. It's a 15 minute job if you spend five minutes trying to open your beer with a tire iron.

Chad,

In reply to your post yesterday, I suggested you do somethng for test purposes.
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=475622

Did you, perchance, have a chance to do it?

I'm beginning to believe that we may be throwing a lot of CPS's at a problem which be solved very easily, and at no cost.

Mine is Post #5 in the above-linked thread.
